About me

I have 3 degrees in Physics. A B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Exeter, an M.Sc. in Nanotechnology from University College London and, what was initially a Ph.D. became an M.Res. in Quantum Information Science in Diamond from the University of Bristol.

Outside of the academic setting I am a qualified coaching assistant with England Athletics for Bristol & West Athletics Club and am currently in the process of completing a full coaching qualification. My primary focus is coaching specialised athletes in the discipline of javelin and developing strength, conditioning, and mobility for throwers.
Personally, I spend regular time developing gymnastics strength training and doing yoga. I apply much of this to rock climbing. I am frequently found in the local rock climbing gym in winter and in fairer weather the local crags in Bristol. My more distant adventures are in the mountains of North Wales.
When I'm indoors I'm frequently playing the piano or making digital music.

My long-term goals are for winter mountaineering training and I have started to write a book as a companion guide to A-level Mathematics.

Tutor Experience

I have been tutoring full-time for the past 5+ years accruing over 100 students and 3000 hours. My experience initially spanned from KS3 to A-level and in the last year moved to GCSE, A-Level and Undergraduate only.

Where lack of confidence is present, I will help you recognise correct thinking and working and help reveal that you do know what you are doing. This self-reflection helps to build natural esteem.
Encouraging you to be open to getting things wrong, which plays a fundamental role in getting it correct.
Homework. It is an important tool for me to test your understanding and progress. However, I will be aware if it creates an overload with school work.
Spending time developing exam technique early on in the academic year, helping you become familiar and relaxed with exam-style questions.
Clear communication with parents and students, with regular check-ins to assist progress.

Seeing the vast array of different situations student find themselves in has made me increasingly sensitive to other areas of their lives that might be impacting their studies. As a result, I am very open to discussing anything with them should they bring it up or I sense there is something playing on their mind. I find this really helps build a welcome environment for the student and makes them more relaxed in the session, which is invaluable for study.

Most of my clients have been on a one-to-one basis and have worked with them for a few months to 3 years or more. I have had intermittent experience working with groups of 2 to 6 students in local schools and also worked on a one-to-one basis with children with SEN.

Most of my work has been in a face-to-face setting but over the last 2-3 years I have been working with increasingly more students in an online capacity and a few internationally.

I have covered all the main exam boards (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) with students for both GCSE Maths and Science and have experience with IGCSE Edexcel Maths and IAQA Science.
For A-Level I have covered extensively OCR and Edexcel Maths syllabus. I focus on all the core modules and specialise in mechanics.
In A-level physics, I have covered AQA, OCR and WJEC.
For Undergraduates I am currently limiting myself to 1st year material, of which I will consider anything but it needs to be cleared with me and I will need course notes to vet first. So far I have had a couple of students both requiring support with Mathematical Methods for Physicists.


Antony has tutored my daughter in maths throughout years 10 and 11 and she has transformed from a reluctant maths student who struggled in class tests to someone who confidently tackled her GCSE exams and is even considering taking maths A-level. Antony's gentle encouragement and guided work has made a huge difference, and from a parent's point of view I have found him very easy to communicate with, flexible and approachable. My daughter Lillie has been tutored in maths by Antony for the past three years. We first contacted Antony because, having once enjoyed maths, Lillie had lost confidence in her ability and was starting to hate it at GCSE. Antony took great interest in getting to know Lillie as a person and did such a good job of reviving her enjoyment of maths that she got an A* at GCSE and decided to take it at A level! He is consistently patient and gives very clear, step-by-step explanations. He is able to provide comprehensive background information about the mechanisms and workings of maths for students like Lillie who need to understand maths in a more general context. He welcomes questions and queries and will happily offer alternative explanations until a point is fully understood. Antony is a kind person and concerned about the general well-being of his students. He understands the pressure of exams and is a very calming influence on stressed students. Confidence is an important factor in maths and Antony’s support and encouragement has restored Lillie’s faith in herself. She has thoroughly enjoyed being taught by him and I think it’s fair to say that she would never have taken A-level maths without him. Antony is an experienced and dedicated tutor and I highly recommend him to anyone needing help with maths.
