About Me

Three interesting things about me:

I quit my career in finance to tutor because I realised how much I loved to teach and how much I hated being stuck in the office!

I also work in the wine industry and have recently opened the Provisions Wine School, where I combine my love of teaching and wine.

Pre-COVID, I spent at least two months of the year travelling. My last big trip took me through the Caucasus and the Middle East including Georgia, Armenia, Jordan and Israel.

Tutor Experience

I have experience teaching over 150 students including A-level candidates and university undergraduates. I hold a First from the LSE in Economics and Economic History and have been teaching for five years.

Studying for your exams is hard work and can be stressful. I try to make the process a bit easier. My tutorials don’t just aim to teach economics but how to study efficiently and build exam technique.

Even for the best student, trying to guess what the examiner wants can be very hard. I use my years of experience studying and teaching economics and the hundreds of mock exam answers students have written for me to guide students towards the top grades.

My tutorials revolve around these three key teaching strategies to ensure exam success:

1. Practice through past paper style questions, set and marked weekly, to provide students with constant feedback about how they are progressing and where they can improve
2. Real-world, up-to-date examples which keep tutorials fresh and relevant throughout a student's course of study
3. Building a student's exam technique through essay plans, model answers and the guided study of mark schemes.

Testimonials

Ms D, parent of a student at Southhampton University:

"Sam tutored my son in Economics for six months. A student who had never done economics at school, had no mind for mathematical subjects and was failing in the coursework at University for this required module.

Sam took this all in his stride and was incredibly patient. He began with the basics and was very thorough, ensuring that my son really understood every step and was well prepared for his exam at the end of the year. Sam has impeccable manners and was regularly in touch with myself with progress as well as his student which was valuable.

The end result, entirely due to Sam’s teaching, was a 2.1 in this module. Needless to say my son was thrilled!

I cannot recommend Sam more highly."

Mr N, economics student at UoL:

"I was introduced to Mr. Sam Povey, and after my first lesson with him I was left with a highly positive impression of Mr. Povey and his work. Together, we've discussed our plan of action and attempted to go through some topics/problems. I immediately noticed how Mr. Povey is able to quickly get a grasp of the essence and key points of an existing problem/issue and find the most appropriate path of work and improvement based on the student's experiences and needs. Mr. Povey showed great attention to details and took the time to give any necessary explanations and offer valuable feedback, all of what made me very hopeful about our future lessons and work together.

Overall, Mr. Povey leaves an impression of a highly skilled tutor, and I would most certainly recommend him as a very qualified and experienced tutor. I sincerely wish Mr. Povey much success in all of his work."

Mr G, economics applicant:

"Whilst using the tutorial sessions from the Profs in the past and being absolutely satisfied with them. This time round I required their admissions services and I worked with an absolutely outstanding admissions tutor, Sam Povey! I would highly recommend using the admissions service the Profs offers, and for those who want to study Economics at university, then Sam is your guy! He has helped me create the best personal statement someone can ever make, standards wayyyyyyy beyond what colleges advise you to include."

Ms H, student at City University:

"Sam is a really good tutor, he helped me understand economics in a simple and easy way. He has helped me so much and I would recommend him to anyone that's struggling with economics."

Mrs N, parent of IB economic student:

"I’m so happy that I finally found someone highly qualified like Sam on very short notice. Thank you so for all your help."

Mr S, student at LSE:

"Sam was extremely clear in his explanations of key concepts and patient in teaching. He was always on time and carried strong passion for the subject on hand evidently seen through his extensive knowledge. Managed to achieve solid results in the end of year examination because of him! Much thanks"
