About Me

I graduated with a BA in English Literature from the University of York and gained my teaching qualifications from the University of Cambridge. Beginning my career working in London, I have spent the past 14 years teaching in Japan and Spain. While in Japan, I lectured at two universities in English Language, Psychology, and Intercultural Communication.

I returned to the UK this year to pursue a long-held dream to study for a Master's degree in Creative Writing on the University of East Anglia's prestigious course, where I am the current recipient of the Kowitz Scholarship.

In addition to my teaching career, I am an award-winning portrait photographer, music journalist and occasional voice actor. I like long strolls in the countryside, practising yoga and learning new things.

Tutor Experience

During my fifteen-year career I've worked with students studying English literature for pleasure, those writing their Master's theses, and others aiming to pass entrance exams for overseas study and university placements. This has involved language instruction, writing practice and feedback, poetry and prose composition and development of self-editing skills.

I am an approachable and adapatable tutor and begin my tutoring sessions by assessing my student's needs to negotiate a plan of study with them. I then produce bespoke lessons tailored to their needs. Depending on the needs of the student this could, for example, involve prepatory reading, language activities, or research before class which are then reviewed and further developed during face-to-face discussion and exploration utilizing online whiteboards, revision quizzes and formative testing to assess progress. My lessons are goal-focussed and success-oriented and I have a particular ability to inspire and encourage confidence, critical thinking and creativity in my students.

Topic Expertise

My main area of expertise is in teaching English to second-language speakers and I have significant experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes, including IELTS and TOEFL for university entrance and visa requirements.

Testing and exams have been an area of specialism and I have also taught students taking FCE and CAE exams, helping to develop specific skills and fluency.

I have worked with many students on developing their writing skills for essays, theses and creative work. I am also possibly THE best person to discuss a good book with and have covered authors as diverse as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Hans Rosling, Jhumpa Lahiri, George Saunders, George Eliot, and Rebecca Skloot in addition to those on school exam curriculums.
