About Me

I attended a state school in West London; Oxford University (Worcester College); Oxford University Department of Education.

After university, I worked in product development for a tour operator, then briefly worked in finance before rediscovering my passion for education.

I have worked in a wide range of schools, in both 'chalkface' and leadership positions.

I now work as a lecturer and an examiner, in addition to tutoring, both face-to-face and online.

In my spare time, I enjoy living in a rural location - having grown up in London - with the opportunities this offers for walking and sea swimming. I also write short stories and am working on a novel.

Tutor Experience

I have tutored for the past ten years, working mainly online.

I enjoy working with students at all attainment levels. My academic background and experience enable me to tutor the most academic students (for example, those preparing for the ELAT examination), while my personality and temperament fit me to work also with students who struggle academically, including (for example) adults and young people who are resitting their English Language GCSE examination after the experience of failure.

I was a full-time secondary English teacher and Head of English in both state and independent schools for over twenty years before beginning to work as a tutor. I currently combine my work as a tutor with part-time work as a College lecturer, teaching both young people and adults. I also work as an examiner team leader for Edexcel (A Level English Literature), and as an examiner for AQA (GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature).

To 'educate' - etymologically speaking - means to 'draw out', and that is what I aim to do with my students. I know how to build on whatever the student is able to offer, including those students whose previous experience has led to discouragement and disaffection – thus building students' confidence so that learning can take place. An effective tutor must also have an expert understanding of the subject, and must know when and how to deploy it, listening to his students and adapting to their needs, offering sufficient depth and detail to enable the highest attaining students to make further progress.

The standard fee quoted on my profile is for A Level/ ELAT; I also tutor for GCSE, where fees may be lower.
