About Me

About three-quarters of the way through my Doctorate at Merton College in the University of Oxford, and with exceptional Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees from the University of Manchester, I am a well-qualified ancient historian and archaeologist. I have experience of providing Oxford’s famous tutorials, and from this I take a flexible, student-focused approach. I am keen to nurture each tutee’s interests, tailor teaching to their own learning styles, and to focus on transferable skills in source-criticism, essay-writing and critical thinking, so that students learn not only for one specific exam or qualification, but also for life.

Beyond a wide-ranging and detailed knowledge of ancient history, classical archaeology and classical literature, I also have intimate insights into the Oxbridge admissions process from both sides of the interview table. I am well-acquainted with the AQA and OCR specifications in History at GCSE and A-Level, as well as the OCR specification in Classical Civilization, and Greek and Latin language. I have privately tutored students in academic writing in a range of disciplines, and am a winner of the University of Manchester’s prestigious Alexander Hope Kyd prize for an Undergraduate essay.

I am excited to work with a range of students, from secondary level to postgraduate, to help them to achieve their learning goals. I'm passionate about creative and engaging collaborative learning, helping students achieve for themselves that 'penny-drop' moment.

Away from academia, I am an enthusiastic actor and theatre-maker, with fourteen semi-professional productions under my belt, a keen artist and art-looker-atter, a regular quizzer, collector of things, and an unreformed book-addict.

Tutor Experience

I have contributed to the teaching of core Greek history modules at Magdalen College, Oxford, and have provided face-to-face tutoring on an informal basis for a number of clients over the last five years.

Topic Expertise

I achieved a first-class Bachelors' degree in Ancient History from the University of Manchester. More wide-ranging than the degree title would suggest, this degree provided a detailed grounding in Greek language and literature (Homer, the Homeric Hymns, Pindar), Latin literature (Catullus), Greek history (Archaic and Classical), Roman history (Republic, Empire, military), Greek art, Eastern Mediterranean archaeology, Greek interstate relations, ancient slavery and historiography. In my third year, I won the prestigious Alexander Hope Kyd award for outstanding performance in an undergraduate essay.

I proceeded to a Masters' degree in Classics and Ancient history, also at Manchester, during which I expanded my knowledge of the Greek language and picked up specialisms in Mediterranean maritime archaeology, epigraphy and Greek historiography. I also achieved a mark of 89%, the highest awarded to any of my cohort, for an essay on the ancient Athenian grain trade.

I am presently an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded doctoral researcher in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at Merton College, University of Oxford, and have carried over my interest in the ancient grain trade to my DPhil thesis. As part of this, I have expanded my training in the Latin language, numismatics and modern economic theory.

As always, very helpful and great at showing where I can improve

- Ancient History

Chris is fantastic, really knows his subject and how to teach at a-level standard, both in terms of knowledge and essay structure. My son actually enjoys his tutorials and his confidence in the subject has increased enormously -thank you Chris

- History

After a series of classes with Chris, my essay writing skills have significantly increased. My knowledge was good but my structuring was terrible. Since starting, Chris has helped me bring my history grade up from Cs and Ds to As in my most recent mock exams. Thanks Chris :)

- History

Very helpful! Christopher was patient and really helped boost my essay writing skills.

Testimonials

Alex: I have found Christopher’s tutoring to be excellent over the past two years. The attention to detail was always superb and there was never any reluctance to go above and beyond what was expected to ensure I understood the content/skills being developed in his lessons. This both helped me in my A Level studies and in focusing on skills for undergraduate history.

Ben: Chris is such an amazing tutor, helped me gain confidence with history again and helped me start getting my grades up in history was really nice to talk with and his teaching skills are amazing, loved my time with him!

Akram: I would absolutely recommend Chris. He supported me through my Economics degree, be it macro or micro modules, and not only that - he was able to support me on my dissertation which was to do more with businesses and financial performance. He was also able to give me guidance on more generalised modules from my placement year, supporting me in achieving high marks in my business portfolio which was the basis of my future career plan in finance. Before Chris I was struggling to align my ideas with what I put on paper, going from achieving a 2:2 in second year and then a 1st in 3rd year only due to his help, I can honestly say that without his guidance, I would not have got there. I would recommend him for any type of field as he was able to support me in Economics, Business and Finance without having a high knowledge base in these areas. 10/10 would highly recommend his services.
