I am a native Californian who fell in love with chemistry in high school and never looked back. I first started teaching by helping my younger siblings with their maths. I really enjoy watching a student grow from struggling with a subject to competency and eventually mastery of the material. I believe that showing how a subject ties not only into real life, but also other subjects can be an effective way to ignite a student’s intellectual curiosity for a particular subject. I also feel that practice makes perfect, and that tutoring sessions should include plenty of on-hands practice intermingled with instruction and review.
In my free time I enjoy watching sci fi shows like Stark Trek and Dr. Who. I also am an avid knitter and crocheter who likes to experiment in the kitchen and take long walks exploring the different neighborhoods of London, my new home.
I have been a tutor for over ten years. My experience ranges from tutoring chemistry and maths at the high school level to teaching and tutoring general and organic chemistry at the university level. I have also worked as a teaching assistant for a number of organic chemistry classes. While at UC Berkeley I worked as a chemistry tutor for three years through the Student Learning Center, and while at Caltech for my Ph.D. I tutored high school students in chemistry and maths for six years through the Rise program at the Caltech Y. I have also worked with a number of private clients during my time at both university and graduate school.
I have experience helping student prepare for their SAT II’s and AP exams in the States. I am also familiar with the syllabi for the Chemistry GCSE and A-level exams as well as the Maths GCSE exam in the UK. In the States I also was a teaching assistant for organic chemistry five times, and personally oversaw and graded lab reports for lab sections of an average of twenty four students a term.
