About Me

I am an English teacher with 15 years of international tutoring experience. I focus on UK entrance exams, GCSE/A level/IB English, essay-writing skills, SAT, AP and EFL. I tailor my tuition to the needs of each student, creating wide-ranging, discussion-based lessons. By focusing on close textual analysis, my goal is to enhance a student’s critical abilities and intellectual awareness in addition to preparing them for specific exams/assignments.
Aside from tutoring, I'm an avid traveller and a professional photographer. I enjoy learning about the histories and cultures of different countries through their art and history, and by visiting the places themselves. I am always keen to explore new topics and incorporate them into my lessons when appropriate to instil a genuine love of learning which the students can carry with them on their academic journeys.

Tutor Experience

My experience ranges from school and summer-camp classroom teaching to private tuition in the UK and abroad. After working as a tutor in London, I was based in Moscow for four years tutoring many different subjects, including top UK school entrance exams (including Westminster and St Paul's), US University entry (including Chicago and Yale), IB English, and general EFL at a range of ages and levels. Over the years, I have also taught in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Beijing and Monaco. I feel that I have acquired enough experience to deliver a specialised programme for each student, based on their level, personality and specific requirements. As well as teaching the fundamentals of effective written expression, I help students unlock their ability to analyse the complexities of a text and construct responses that are clear, concise and well-organised.

Testimonials

Jack was a great help in Moscow. He taught both my daughters English and it was wonderful to see them improve so much in just a couple of months! They always loved having lessons with Jack and I definitely recommend him. I hope I can work with him again in the future.

Jack worked with us for two years in Moscow. He came to our home and taught Andrey English and spent time at the weekend as his tutor/governor, playing football etc. He also joined us on many trips abroad- Spain, Mauritius, Bali- and was always being positive and cheerful and fitting in with our busy family lifestyle. He is a calm and professional tutor who delivered excellent results. Andrey is now at St Paul’s Junior school and we are very grateful to Jack for all his hard work.

Jack stayed with our family in Russia for three months October-December 2012. And then his family hosted my brother George in the UK for a couple of weeks. Jack helped George prepare for his entrance exams into King’s School Canterbury (which George passed); and also prepared our youngest sister Polina with getting into King’s Junior School. Our family is very happy with Jack. He did a great job with wonderful attitude! I am very happy to recommend him as a tutor.

Jack tutored my 15 year old daughter, Jenny, for 2 years in Moscow in preparation for her Sixth Form entrance exams. The main focus points of the lessons were English Literature and essay writing. Jack had a unique approach to the subject matter, which had a strong emphasis on maintaining Jenny's motivation by allowing her a degree of input in the lessons. They would agree on essay topics that she found engaging and worthwhile. They were able to achieve this while following the course program and covering all of the recommended material for the exams.Jack was able to show Jenny ways of approaching any given topic in a creative way. He exceeded our expectations in giving Jenny a deep insight into the Literature they covered. She really enjoyed having lessons with such a creative and broadminded tutor.Jack is a very friendly and thoughtful person. He was always accommodating of our sometimes hectic schedule. We appreciated the genuine interest he had in Jenny's progress. As a result of his help, Jenny passed her exams and was awarded a place at King's School Canterbury.
