I have spent nearly thirty years as a lecturer teaching Mechanical Engineering. This has included Design, Computer Aided Design, Solid Mechanics (Stress Analysis), Composite Materials and Mechanical Integrity. All of which require a working knowledge of Mathematics.
Coming to the world of academia as an experienced chartered engineer (CEng) from industry enabled me to explain more of the end results and the reasons why subjects on an Engineering Degree are studied.
I became involved with research in the areas of stress analysis and materials and have supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate projects. Whist lecturing full-time, I worked for and was awarded a PhD in 2000, and continued with research in this field.
My publications include approximately 80 academic papers and I have co-authored an undergraduate textbook on mechanics of solids/stress analysis.
I was a qualified chartered engineer working in industry before joining Higher Education. I subsequently spent nearly 30 years as a university lecturer teaching a range of engineering subjects. As a practising engineer, I have had considerable experience of “real life” engineering and I combine this into the academic side where ever possible. This helps to show students why it is necessary to master certain topics and puts essential parts of the “puzzle” in place, facilitating a fuller and faster learning.
A significant time as a tutor has taught me a great deal. Something that I have always worked to is that there is no such thing as a silly question. I know that no one fully understands everything the first time round and so I encourage student to question and to ask the same question again if need be.
I have a good grasp of the workings of Higher Education having recent and relevant experience of how exam boards work. I have attended exam boards at least once a year for almost 30 years and as a course Leader, I have also chaired a good number of these boards. I have also attended exam boards in other institutions in my role as an external examiner for Mechanical Engineering.
I have taught undergraduate and postgraduate students in the subject areas of Design, Computer Aided Design, Stress Analysis Mechanics and Dynamics. More specifically, I have been responsible for the following University modules:
Engineering Design Year 1, 2 and 3 (L1, L2 and L3).
Solid Mechanics and Dynamics Year 1 (L4).
Computer Aided Design Year 2 and Year 3 (L5 and L6).
Structural Integrity (Masters module, L7).
Supervision of final year and postgraduate project students (L6 and L7).
Structural Integrity (Masters module, L7), where I covered the Analysis of Composites.
