About Me

At Cambridge I studied for a BA in Mathematics and then a Masters in Astrophysics, graduating with a 1st Class degree. I ranked 1st in the competitive Part III General Relativity exam and achieved high distinctions in exams on Quantum Field Theory and Black Holes. In the summer after 3rd year I completed a Summer Research Project where I engaged in research on General Relativity with Dr Claude Warnick. Next year I will be beginning further studies at ETH Zurich, where I will be changing my focus to theoretical condensed matter physics.

I attended Kings College London Mathematics School for 6th form, where I undertook A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics, and also an AS-Level in Computing. While there I participated in lots of mathematics competitions (SMC, BMO, Team Maths Challenge) and was elected to be leader of our school mathematics team. I took the STEP examinations to gain entrance to Cambridge and started studying there in 2016.

In my free time, I enjoy film (watching and writing), mountaineering, and playing pool.

Tutor Experience

I have been tutoring since 2019, and have experience teaching Maths/Physics from GCSE through to A Level. I also specialise in Oxbridge admissions coaching and interview preparation. I have experience tutoring students for STEP, MAT, PAT, and 16+ admissions tests, with proven success. I also coach a number of students on problem solving and Olympiad preparation. I teach online with a WACOM pen tablet.

My philosophy:

There are 2 components to learning mathematics: the "exploratory phase" (EP) and the "pragmatic phase" (PP).

Exploratory Phase (EP): Learning a course can seem like a daunting task, but all that you really need is consistent effort. It is "simple" to learn maths, but not necessarily "easy". The easiest way to learn effectively is to foster an interest in the subject, which is what I aim to do with all of my students through our lessons. Once this interest is fostered, the student will be happy to invest their own time into their studies in a productive way.

Pragmatic Phase (PP): Here we focus on specific preparation to help the student achieve their goals, often an exam. The reality of doing well in mathematics is that you need to perform well in examinations. Being clever or knowing all the topics won't necessarily be enough. It's important the student understand that they need to do a lot of specific preparation tailored to their goal e.g. regular full-exam-condition timed papers which I can then give feedback on, rote memorisation etc.

The trick is striking the balance between the EP and the PP. I view it as my job to guide the student through the process of learning and exploring the material in an engaging way, and then, at the appropriate time, I can coach them solely on the pragmatic phase ensuring their success.
