About Me

In 2018 I graduated from Oxford University with a Masters in Mathematics, but I'm never seen too far from a rugby field or football pitch.

I've always enjoyed life outside the classroom; Gold DofE expeditions and team sports represent the leading aspects of my personality. Aside from sport, I enjoy listening to music or going out for a few drinks in the pub to catch up with my friends.

I have been trained by the Oxford University Counselling Service and served a year as Welfare Officer within my college. I regularly dealt with serious, confidential problems students were facing at University, and this role exemplifies the compassion and understanding I try to carry through into my tutoring.

Tutor Experience

I have worked for Spires for 5 years and have considerable experience tutoring young adults. In my teenage years, I coached children's rugby and tutored voluntarily. When I joined Oxford University in 2014 I began to tutor professionally.

I stand out as an A-Level tutor due to my experience at identifying how young adults think and learn - especially when they are confused or distressed - and tailoring my approach accordingly. My aim is to instil calmness and to build confidence by getting to know my students and addressing their underlying learning issues. This helps them quickly develop a foundation upon which they can independently build a deep and durable understanding.

Miscommunication can often be a substantial learning barrier with Maths and Science, and not everyone clicks with their teacher. This is where I would love to provide a helping hand.

Testimonials

"Lessons with Sam weren’t only incredibly useful and productive, they were also made enjoyable by the enthusiasm and effort brought, by Sam, to every lesson. I wouldn’t have made it into the university I am at now without his help and I would therefore highly recommend his services for just about anyone looking to dramatically improve their grades and general understanding for maths"

George 2018/19 - achieved A in Maths A level to study Maths at Birmingham University

"Sam has been a great help with revision for my A Level exam. I had quite a few specific questions that I wanted to cover with Sam and he explained them in lots of detail, identifying common mistakes students make which was very helpful. He would easily spot which sections I struggled with most which made it easier when choosing weaker areas to focus on. I would definitely recommend him as a tutor!"

Lizzy 2019 - achieved A* in Maths A level and now applying to study medicine at university

"Sam's tutoring style works well for topics which the student has covered but needs to strengthen their understanding or confidence in. The approach of pointing in the right direction rather than just explaining things again means the student feels more like they've figured something out, making them more likely to remember the method. I also found Sam's willingness to go off the main topic to explain another supporting topic very useful."

Edward 2019 - Numerical Mathematics module at The University of London

"I was tutored by Sam for a year for my A-Level in Maths. My lessons with him were extremely useful and he explained more difficult topics thoroughly, ensuring that they were delivered in a way best-suited for my understanding. I would highly recommend him as a tutor!"

Sai 2017/18 - achieved grade A in Mathematics A-level to study Physics at Birmingham University.
