About Me

I am currently employed to teach on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in History of Art at the University of St Andrews and the Edinburgh College of Art. Alongside, I am finalising my PhD at University College London (UCL), which focuses on art and climate change. In 2018, I graduated from the MA programme in the History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art with a Distinction grade, and I received my BA in the subject from UCL with First Class Honours.

Tutor Experience

I have several years of experience teaching art history, both at university and as a private tutor. I am qualified to tutor the subject at all levels: from A-level to postgraduate. My expertise is officially recognised by my Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

I am currently employed to lead weekly classes on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate modules at the University of St Andrews and the Edinburgh College of Art. Previously, I acted for several years as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant at UCL, while I completed my PhD. In these capacities, I have designed and/or taught courses on subjects including: ‘Art in the Anthropocene’, ‘Art in Europe and Beyond to 1600’, and ‘Modernity, Empire, and Revolution’. In addition, I have been acted as Undergraduate Dissertation Coordinator—a position which involved working closely with students to complete their final year theses. Alongside, working with several agencies, I have privately tutored students on subjects as diverse as painting in Revolutionary France, Buddhist architecture, and feminism and fashion in 1960s Britain.

My approach to teaching is flexible, as I design each class to align with the needs of the student. I am well-qualified to provide feedback on essays and dissertations. Likewise, I enjoy sharing my passions for art and teaching through online video lessons, in which can I discuss assignments and clarify topics that students are struggling with. I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate which is linked in the side panel of my profile.

Here are some excerpts from feedback that I have received from my university students in recent years, which testify to the experience of my classes:
- ‘Everything is so great and clear.’
- ‘Feel more confident in my own observations of art now.’
- ‘Enjoyed every single lecture delivered.’

Topic Expertise

I am qualified to tutor art history at all levels: from A-level to postgraduate.

I have experience of teaching subjects as diverse as: art and environmentalism; painting in Revolutionary France; art history and race; feminism and fashion in 1960 Britain; and the metropolis within modernist poetry.

A wonderful tutor who goes above and beyond to provide detailed and considerate feedback. Edward has really helped me to develop my writing style over the last few months and has given me encouragement throughout the whole process. His expertise in all areas of art history and theory is outstanding. His work ethic is admirable as he always responded to my emails promptly and provided feedback quickly. I will miss being tutored by him and I could not recommend him enough to any prospective students!

Went off topic a lot but it’s art history so unavoidable!

Testimonials

'Edward has extensive experience as a professional Art History tutor and has unanimously received positive reviews for his classes. As a fellow art historian, I can testify to his ability in this role.' — Brittany J

'Edward is a highly personable and supportive tutor who I've known for over 8 years, since my undergraduate degree. He has a diverse range of knowledge across many topics in art, philosophy, and literature. I'd say that one of his key strengths is making complex ideas easy to digest. Overall he is an inspiring teacher who is compassionate towards his students and works 'with' them rather than just 'teaching' them. I would recommend him if you need help on proofreading, essays, dissertations etc. in the field of art history, curation, museum studies and contemporary art.' — Cyrus H

'Although I have not been tutored by Edward, I am convinced he would be excellent in this role. He is organised, calm, clear, balanced, sensible, professional, interested, interesting and passionate. He is helpful, dependable and a great communicator. As a tutor myself, I would strongly recommend Edward to those seeking tutoring services.'
— Hugh C
