About Me

My interest and experience in anthropology span 30 years. I have advanced degrees in both anthropology and archaeology, and I have done research fieldwork in Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Belize and the USA. My PhD at the London School of Economics and my peer-reviewed publications were based on my ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil on urban religious movements.

My PhD and most of my lecturing work took place at one of the word’s top-rated anthropology departments, The London School of Economics. While there I was able to listen, participate in, and influence academic discussions of the highest level. I was also tasked with shepherding new, young undergraduates through their first years of studying what is both a challenging and fascinating field.

I speak Spanish, Portuguese and Italian fluently. I love anthropology because of the way it helps us to see the world through the eyes of other people in radically different life situations. It is a powerful tool for overcoming cultural divisions, and I love to help young people learn more about it.

Tutor Experience

I have lectured at three universities in the UK - the London School of Economics, Kings College London and Brunel University. I have also been the persona tutor for around 100 first and second-year undergraduates. At Kings I taught a basic introduction course to anthropology and the anthropological approach to studying religion. At Brunel I taught undergraduates and masters students about how anthropologists have approached some classical life topics - marriage, death, childhood and work. Finally at LSE I taught a specialist course to third-year undergraduates on the anthropology of religion.

As a tutor at LSE I guided first and send-year undergraduates in their coursework, I advised them on essay writing, and helped them plan their future academic progress. Prior to that I taught and tutored undergraduates as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for two courses at the LSE, and for three courses at the University of California Santa Barbara.

In my approach to teaching I take every student seriously as an intelligent and independent thinker. I have found in my career that when students feel respected they are more likely to be curious, to listen, and to learn.
