I have been a teacher for 14 years, having taught in both the UK and overseas. I am passionate about education and particularly an IB education.
‘Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire’, W. B. Yeats.
Yeats is not just describing education here; he is describing the responsibility that a teacher has to create lessons that inspire, engage but most importantly, foster a love of learning that will equip students with the ability to adapt to the challenges presented by an unpredictable future. I believe that most education systems have the same goal, and that goal is to create independent learners that are self-motivated, interested in a wide variety of subjects, have the confidence to seek out knowledge for themselves and the ability to apply the skills they have learnt to unfamiliar situations. This cannot be achieved if teachers approach teaching with the aim of ‘filling a pail’. Teachers have a responsibility to light fires, to generate interest and to create opportunities for students to acquire skills before challenging them to use these skills to explore the world in which they live.
I have taught GCSE across numerous exam boards and I have taught both Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE. I also have nine years (including the new courses) of IB Diploma teaching and can cover English Language and Literature, English Literature, as well as English B. I can support you with English and Media A-Level too.
In addition, I have supervised numerous IB Extended Essays with my students achieving no less than a B each time. I have an excellent understanding of essay writing particularly how to structure essays and could support students from KS3 all the way through to Undergraduate with essay writing.
