About Me
I've been a Head of Geography (11-18) for 5 years, and Geography Teacher for 8 years. Previously I worked as an Advisor in international development for Oxfam and the Department for International Development. I bring this experience into my teaching to bring geography alive. I coach people to achieve their best and I'm proud to have supported my students from all backgrounds into university places in Oxbridge and Russell group universities. As an examiner for AQA and Edexcel I know what exam boards are looking for and how to help students of different abilities to achieve their potential.
I am currently studying for an MSc in Ecology (my second MSc - I just love that learning!) so I know what it is like to study and what kinds of support we all need to enjoy learning and achieve our best. I've helped my students over the years to overcome their fears and boost their confidence with a friendly, supportive and sympathetic teaching style. I look foward to meeting you!
Tutor Experience
I have 8 years' experience as a teacher of geography (PGCE); 5 years of that as a Head of Geography (up to Summer 2021). I have been online teaching and develping online learning materials since lockdown in April 2020.
I have been an examiner for AQA and Edexcel (GCSE and A Level Geography).
I have been teaching through Spires since November 2021 and enjoy teaching online lessons using a range of interactive activities to make learning as interesting and informative as possible. I focus on helping students get a secure understanding of fundamental geographic concepts and skills which they can apply to lots of different exam questions. I can offer support for university entrance including Oxbridge applications and mock interviews.
At university level I can support writing skills, hypotheses and research methods for geography, international development and ecological and environmental studies.
I have taught and written learning and assessment materials for all 11-18 geography curriculum demands including GCSE and A-Level fieldwork; A-Level (NEA) coursework design and writing; extended essay writing; statistics and sample design; revision; structuring exam questions; and exam technique.
I'm currently studying for my (second) MSc in Ecology, so I have experience of the latest learning methods and university requirements - and I know what it feels like to be a student!
Topic Expertise
Geography GCSE and A-Level; Ecology to degree level. All curriculum areas including NEA, fieldwork, revision, exams and extended writing. At degree level:the design of scientific methods for environmental monitoring including experimental design.
International development - especially political economy and social policy
Ecology - I am currently completing an MSc in Ecology.
