I love all things outdoors – whether I’m volunteering with my local conservation group or out for a run in rural East Anglia. I took on an allotment last year and growing my own vegetables has been a real achievement! I am a big animal-lover, and I enjoy having a cuddle with my amazing lap-cat Simba. On the side I am also an artist – I sell my botanical illustrations and landscape paintings online.
As a keen geographer one of my biggest passions is travelling! My research has taken my to some fascinating countries in East Africa, where I have climbed several Rift Valley volcanoes.
Hi there! My name is Catherine and I am an aspiring teacher who loves to talk about geography and see others achieve their full potential.
I have a PhD in Volcanology from Aberystwyth University and have been a research scientist and teaching assistant at the University of Cambridge for the past 3 years. My research has taken me to exciting locations across East Africa – where I have been reconstructing the eruptive history of poorly studied volcanoes. Prior to this I studied for a BSc in Environmental Earth Science (2.1) and an MPhil in Geochemistry, also at Aberystwyth University.
My passion for geography shines through in all my teaching. I have tutored students from GCSE and A-Level through to university. At Cambridge I am a director of studies for geography and I teach topics ranging from Quaternary climate change to the physical and social elements of volcanology. Whilst at Aberystwyth I lectured for volcanology topics and tutored for petrology, sedimentology, structural geology and mapping, and environmental monitoring/analysis. I have also run workshops on laboratory and field skills.
I have a creative approach to teaching and I know the importance of building a supportive learning environment, where students can freely voice whatever questions or queries they may have. I am very patient, and have been told I have a natural flair for explaining topics clearly. I tailor my tutoring to individual students’ needs, and am available between sessions to answer questions and clarify information.
If you have any questions please get in touch and I’d be happy to have a quick chat with you.
I have expert knowledge of geography, geology and environmental science – having been a research assistant across these disciplines. I really enjoy exploring the latest developments in my subject and strive to keep my teaching topical and fresh.
At University I have taught for a range of modules, including: volcanology (physical and human), Quaternary climate change, sedimentology, petrology, structural geology and environmental monitoring/analysis.
I am also conversant with a range of geological and geographic software and am happy to help dissertation students with developing their writing style and data analysis/interpretation.
I have an excellent understanding of geography curriculum at GCSE and A-Level. My students have hugely benefited from my tutoring, and have gone on to obtain A and A* grades.
From a recent A-Level student: "I found Erin's help really useful in improving my geography knowledge, particularly physical geography, and she has helped me to feel more confident in subject knowledge. She takes time to explain things in an effective way to help me understand. We also practiced exam technique and questions which was really useful when going into exams or approaching exam questions in class."
