I hope that you will find me easy to talk to and flexible and quickly attuned to your specific needs. I am interested in helping you, as an individual, identify your learning needs and develop. As a registered pharmacist for thirty years I have experience of all branches of the profession. I have developed the consultation and self-care programmes within the Leicester MPharm and a novel consultation self-evaluation tool for students (iSED®). My Model for Pharmacy Consultations has been published in the International Pharmacy Journal and is linked on the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (England) website. I have been extensively involved in the writing and running of OSCEs for pharmacy students in all year groups and also for registered pharmacists. I also run OSCE workshops to help students prepare for these anxiety-provoking assessments.
For the past 16 years I have been a senior lecturer in pharmacy practice at the Leicester School of Pharmacy. This has involved all manner of learning facilitation: writing and delivery of face to face and online lectures, seminars and tutorials in pharmacy practice; development of tools for self-evaluation of clinical skills; developing, running and scoring OSCEs. To help prepare students for these anxiety-provoking assessments I run OSCE preparation workshops. I have seen that becoming confident in consultation skills takes time and practise and and starts with an understanding of yourself as a communicator. I am also a personal tutor, and every year support students in their journey through the MPharm.
My interest in learning and development stems from my role as pharmacist teacher practitioner in Brighton and was cemented when I took the position of Clinical Tutor at Boots Head Office. At Boots I wrote and delivered training material for their preregistration students and pharmacists, and organised and run the 2 day annual residential pre-registration conference. My own pre-registration experience was in hospital (The Royal London) and industry and my first two years on the Register were in hospital (Hammersmith). I also have a post-graduate diploma in clinical pharmacy.
My experience of pharmacy is broad, but my expertise is in:
- interpersonal communication and consultation/counselling skills
- self-care and management of minor ailments
- all aspects of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) skills based assessment:
writing, scoring, running and supporting students in OSCE preparation
- additional special interests are:
mental health management
