About Me

I studied for my A Levels at Penistone Sixth Form near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. I received results of A*A*A, with full marks for all components of my English Literature A Level. I went on to the University of Cambridge to study English Literature, and continued there for a Masters (MPhil) degree in Medieval and Renaissance Literature. While at Cambridge, I was awarded the Heinemann Prize in 2016 for the best Shakespeare examination script in the year, and the Christopher MacGregor Memorial Award for English Literature in 2018. I then moved to Durham University later in 2018 to study for a PhD in Medieval English Literature, fully funded by a Durham Doctoral Award. I am passionate about education and I have been proud to teach first-year undergraduates for an introductory module in medieval literature here at Durham. I have recently been awarded Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) status in recognition of my pedagogical work. I passed my doctoral examination in July 2022.

I am interested in a wide range of English literature and how it can be taught, ranging from medieval poems such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to twentieth-century literature such as The Great Gatsby and Nineteen Eighty-Four. I studied two early modern plays for my A Level examinations, which I took in 2014 - Shakespeare's The Tempest and John Webster's The White Devil. I am interested in improving the accessibility of Shakespeare and other early modern texts that are taught in schools, unpicking the language and deciphering its meaning. I am also mindful to include theological and political backgrounds in my teaching in order that we can situate texts in their historical context and think through how these backgrounds may shape our understanding.

Tutor Experience

** With apologies, I am not able to take on any new students for the academic year 2022-2023. **

For the past two years I have taught tutorial groups of first-year students at the University of Durham for the module ‘Romance and the Literature of Chivalry’, a survey of medieval romance literature from c. 1150-1500. Throughout my time as a TA I have been committed to providing a safe environment for my students to share and develop ideas, and to demystifying the discipline. I take care to teach methods for approaching essay-writing and examinations to develop writing skills for the students from less privileged educational backgrounds, who are less likely to have accessed essay-focused tuition before university, to achieve higher marks for their written work. For the entirety of the 2020-21 academic year, I taught my Durham students online; I am confident and experienced in using digital methods for teaching.

During my time as an Undergraduate Access Officer for St Catharine's College, Cambridge, I visited numerous schools to give presentations on applying to university and delivered example lessons in English for A Level and GCSE students. I have also mentored A Level students from my old secondary school during their applications to university, providing materials for university entrance tests and discussing techniques for A Level exams.

My rates are £20 per hour for A Level tuition and £35 per hour for university-level tuition.

A brilliant session. Hope's feedback is a brilliant revision resource in itself and the resources she has given me for the AO3 and AO4 points will be invaluable to my revision.

Hope is a fantastic tutor, thanks to her I have covered all the characters in King Lear in detail and have developed some really interesting ideas on the presentation of power, the infantilisation of Lear, the medieval influences such as the trope of infant versus the cruel world, alongside other themes and ideas. My A Level Exam is this Monday and I can't imagine feeling more confident going in. I truly reccomend Hope, she is a tutor who knows how to help you develop and refine your ideas with her endless expertise in Literature.

Testimonials

University, Literature/Academic Writing: 'The feedback on my work is invaluable. Lots of food for thought. I left the class with a very strong sense of the way forward! [...] I have four pages of notes - tremendous stuff.'

A Level, English Literature: 'Hope is a brilliant tutor, she makes a text such as King Lear seems completely understandable and manageable. She helps me refine and formulate my ideas whilst also always giving me new ideas to think about. She is clearly immensely knowledgeable on her subject and it shows :)'

A Level, English Literature: ' This session was brilliant. Hope helped me make a lot of in depth references to my other close reading of the play and together we talked about how they would contribute to an argument in an essay. It's also good to know how helpful watching and re-watching screen and theatre adaptations are to the understanding of the play, so I will be sure to keep doing this! Some technical issues on my end at the end of the session but Hope added extra hours to make sure I got my time equally. Feeling more and more confident after every session!'
'Great mock feedback that helped me recognise how I can improve my answer. This was the first A I received in English Literature (one mark off an A*!), so the sessions are helping loads considering I was a B/C grade student when I started tutoring. We then finished off with some tips on how to cope with exam stress that I can take away and build upon as A-Levels draw closer. A great session.'
'This class was brilliant - we looked through one of my essay answers to a very difficult exam question, and from came up with ideas for future sessions together that were perfectly tailored to my strengths and weaknesses. Hope's feedback shows her genuine passion and care for teaching, and is always developed and constructive. Very glad I took on this question so that we know what to work on!'
