About Me

I have had a passion for study from an early age, especially with regards to languages. I was a King's Scholar at Eton College despite being a year young, and after leaving in 2013 I spent a year working in schools in Oman and the United States before being admitted to the University of Cambridge.

At Cambridge I studied Arabic and Persian as part of the Middle Eastern Studies Tripos, and was a member of Trinity College. In the third of four years, I studied in Egypt and Iran to achieve a good level of spoken proficiency in both languages. In my final Tripos examinations I obtained a First Class degree, and was thus awarded a Senior Scholarship within my College. I was also awarded a Junior Research Scholarship by Trinity. Last October I returned to Cambridge to study for a one-year MPhil, during which I am working to reappraise a particularly misunderstood medieval Persian prose text.

I take great pleasure in travelling and putting my languages to good use, especially seeing as travel provides wonderful and exciting opportunities for photography! I spend a lot of time working with analogue photographic techniques and materials, which translates into many happy hours whiled away in the darkroom amongst my chemicals. I am currently working to publish a collection of photographs I shot on an assignment in Yemen last year, and hope to work in a similar vein in other Middle Eastern locales in the future.

Tutor Experience

I worked as a teaching assistant at the Sultan's School in Muscat for approximately four months in 2013 and subsequently in an similar role at St Thomas' Choir School in New York. I have also written practice papers for 11+ students sitting scholarship exams; I specialised in English, although I have also written Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal reasoning papers. Since the autumn of 2019 I have worked with Tavistock Tutors and have helped a number of clients achieve their goals across a range of subjects.

Topic Expertise

With both Arabic and Persian, I have a high degree of competence in all four key areas of language acquisition. I am able to work in specific registers as per client requirements; with Arabic, I can tailor lessons to accommodate colloquial or formal (Modern Standard) grammatical forms. As regards colloquial dialect, I can teach Egyptian dialect to an upper-intermediate level and Levantine forms at a basic level. As regards Farsi, in addition to colloquial Tehrani dialect I am able to work with students on Classical Persian texts if they so require, as I have a large amount of experience reading both prose and poetry across a wide spectrum of Classical genres.
