My name is Laurence, I have a PhD in Mathematics from The University of Oxford, where I also attended for undergraduate, completing an MMath integrated masters degree in mathematics.
I have 5 years of tutoring experience and have tutored at several Oxford independent schools alongside privately tutoring many students. I cover secondary school Mathematics, teaching students from the 11 up to the age of 18, covering everything from year 7 Mathematics to Further Mathematics A-Level. I am most experienced in tutoring Mathematics/Further Mathematics A-Level, GCSE and IGCSE.
I additionally offer university entrance exam and preparation, covering the MAT/STEP exams required to study Mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge, respectively. I also offer interview preparation for prospective Oxford and Cambridge mathematics students.
In addition to Mathematics tutoring I also offer tutorials covering introductory and advanced MATLAB, having spent the last 4 years using the software to complete my research.
I have tutored A-level, Undergraduate and Masters Physics and Maths for three years for pupils aiming for levels from C-A* (and 1st Class Honours), as well as Oxbridge entrance exams and interview practice.
Academically, I graduated top in my year from Cambridge with a Masters' in Astrophysics, and am now undertaking a PhD in Princeton, following a one-year research placement at Harvard.
I estimate I have at least 6000 hours of experience, having been a tutor since 2011. I initially started teaching Maths and Physics to Engineering students at University and I gradually expanded into secondary school level tuition. I have worked full time as a tutor since 2012 and during that time I have taught Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering.
I have taught A Levels, IGCSE/GCSE, IB, Pre-U, AP and I have covered nearly every exam board including Edexcel, OCR, AQA, WJEC. All of my students are seeking to get into top Univeristies.
What makes me a good tutor is my ability to break down a subject and cover it in a particular order so that a student who might not have a good understanding can understand how to progress through the topics. It doesn't hurt that I have a sense of humour and make my lessons actually fun and enjoyable.

I have been teaching Economics, Statistics and Econometrics since I was in college. After leaving college, I became a full-time professional tutor. I have worked with students who were complete beginners, as well as those who were facing challenges in mastering advanced topics.
I completely understand the initial struggle in decoding the concepts and formulas. I am adept in breaking down these concepts so that students can understand them. I use simple examples so that students can make sense of these topics. I don't encourage memorization and simply recalling the formulas, instead, I focus on the 'why' and 'how'.
I understand that every student has a different way of understanding things. Some students understand the concepts when explained through analogies, others when shown mathematical foundation behind them. I modify my teaching methodology depending on what the student is comfortable with.
I have 8 years of on-ground teaching experience. Since last two years, I have teaching Economics, Statistics and Econometrics online.
During my undergraduate degree, I tutored students in lower years and ran a series of departmental seminars to encourage learning "beyond the textbook." I think it's important to help students make links not just between the subjects they study, but to real-world applications - a component sometimes missing in the high-pressure, rapid-paced school environment. Most crucially, I remember how stressful preparation for GCSEs and A-levels can be- and the tips and tricks students can employ to not only do well in the exam, but to really understand the material.
I am confident working with students of all abilities, particularly those who are motivated but lack confidence in their ability to tackle mathematics and the physical sciences. I am also interested in tutoring students who could benefit from a little extra support with their studies, as well as those who are seeking to be challenged beyond the school curriculum.
I have a lot of experience. In the last 5 years, I have tutored more than 60 students and over 1000 hours. In the last three years, I have specialized in online tutoring. I am familiar with many different syllabuses and focus on exam technique. Once the ideas are clear, is all about practice!
I have successfully tutored a number of students in mathematics, physics, and computing in the past, at both A-level and GCSE. Among my most notable successes was helping a student who did not have classes in Further Maths available at school to achieve an A (highest grade at the time).
The best tutor will guide the student through a process of self-learning and tailor this skilfully to the individual student. It is paramount to properly motivate the pupil to ask the right questions to himself, whilst instilling an interest in the subject as much as possible. The tutor should generally enhance the learning experience beyond what any textbook or routine exercises can provide. With respect to mistakes, it is always important to be gentle and sympathetic, and encouragement should be given when progress is made, though not to the degree of fostering overconfidence. In brief, I believe in a highly interactive and open dialogue between teacher and student.
