My passion is to enable students to enjoy maths, or at least to succeed in passing their exams, including those who hate maths or those who have problems learning generally.
I use a wide variety of teaching methods and resources - including visual , written and electronic- to ensure this objective with each individual.
I regularly attend conferences to learn about new teaching methods and resources and generally mix with other maths teachers and tutors..
Most of my students gain 2 or more grades, especially at GCSE.
My other interests include languages, French particularly , history, music and learning about developments in science.
Tutoring for 19 years, at KS3 , GCSE, IGCSE and A level as well as US exams. Students and parents comment on their increase in confidence and loss of fear.Particularly successful with those with slow learning, dyslexia, autism and other learning differences.
I work to the individual student's pace and preferred learning methods and am noted for my patience.
I have a maths degree and teaching qualifications and have helped many students achieve their goals including those written off by schools or marooned in inappropriate classes.
We have no doubt that Ian's support has enabled our daughter to grow in confidence in her own ability in maths and we feel sure that this change would never have happened without Ian's input. Ian helped Tia greatly with her A Level studies. Richard
Ian is a highly professional tutor and is really helpful and patient when it comes to tutoring my son. He has progressed several levels higher and is really confident in his application of Maths. He is now studying Higher Level Maths at GCSE and this is due to his increased proficiency with Ian. I would not hesitate in recommending him as a tutor. Suk
I am delighted to provide this reference for Ian Swift. Ian has been helping our daughter for the last 2.5 years, starting in year 9 and now approaching GCSE examinations. Our daughter had always found maths hard going but maths had begun to take on a life of its own and anxiety about maths was growing. We were delighted, therefore, to find Ian who has dissolved this fear of maths in a very short space of time. Ian's straightforward, common sense way of tackling problems and his sensitive, patient delivery have proved to be the ideal combination for us. Ian is able to draw on his varied and extensive teaching experience to provide a range of approaches to support understanding. Our daughter often says, "Ian just has lots of different ways of explaining something. If I say I don't get it, he shows me another way. Why has no-one shown me that before?". Ian uses a range of materials in the sessions: online materials and specialist websites are mixed with coloured pens, everyday examples and gentle humour. Ian is student centred and sets realistic and achievable targets. We have no doubt that Ian's support has enabled our daughter to grow in confidence in her own ability in maths and we feel sure that this change would never have happened without Ian's input. Thanks Ian! Caroline Caroline Smith SFHEA Head of Academic Enhancement
Ian has given me the confidence, backed up by a better understanding of my subject. My grades have improved already and my teachers at school are very impressed! All thanks
