My name is Emily, and I am a qualified teacher of English. I live in Colchester with my husband and have worked in state schools in Essex and Suffolk and lectured at the University of Essex.
I love tutoring because I enjoy watching children and young people work towards and meet their potential. I understand the pressure of exams for young people today and that confidence is one of the key factors for exam success. To build a student’s confidence I ensure regular exposure to a range of different exam questions whilst also taking a person-centred approach, working hard to ensure my lessons are tailored to the individual and their academic needs; in my experience this is how children learn best. As part of the tutoring process, I regularly liaise with parents to discuss how lessons are going and feel that an open dialogue is key to good learning.
Since 2014 I have taught English and Sociology to both whole classes of mixed age and ability students, as well as tutoring 1:1, in schools across Essex and Suffolk. I am also experienced in teaching the English components of the 11+ and SATs to both small groups of students and on a 1:1 level with KS2,3, 4 & 5 students. For all subjects and qualifications I plan each lesson individually based on the needs of the student, feed back to them regularly what their areas for improvement are and consistently mark their work against the corresponding mark schemes.
Both Edexcel and AQA GCSE English to KS3&4 students. For students preparing to sit the 11+ I can offer all components of the English section of the CSSE format exam paper, specifically, comprehension, applied reasoning and creative writing. I can also tutor English skills to students preparing to sit their SATs.
Finally, I can offer OCR GCSE and AQA A Level Sociology to KS4&KS5 students.
