About Me

Specialist tutor in undergraduate, master's and PhD/industry-level applied mathematics, mathematical analysis and computational mathematics.

I am an active mathematician with nearly 7 years of experience teaching university-level mathematics, including a 4-year teaching assistantship at UCL that funded my PhD, and over 700 hours of one-to-one tutoring through The Profs since 2022. I have taught dozens of STEM students across a range of disciplines and years of study, earning many 5-star reviews on Spires and Trustpilot (https://tinylink.net/4gSL5, https://tinylink.net/mCc5a), including one from a client whose grades rose from 34% to 76%, the largest possible jump within the UK grading system. I tutor across pure and applied mathematics, but specialise in teaching engineering and physics students, drawing on my background in scientific computing to frame ideas in a practical and useful way for these fields.

My tutoring follows a classical "chalk and talk" approach: sessions are planned rigorously but delivered conversationally, which lets me identify gaps in knowledge as they arise and adapt both the lesson and the longer-term plan accordingly. Alongside the mathematics, I emphasise study skills and tie the material to what my client is working on, contextualising it within their wider studies.

Every client receives a free initial consultation covering the overall goal, the challenging topics, the timescale, and a short assessment of where the conceptual issues lie. From here, I design a bespoke teaching plan that typically falls into one of two types. Long-term tuition runs over a term, an academic year, or the summer before a new course, and aims to build a lasting understanding at the client's pace. Exam preparation focuses on improving marks for an imminent exam, using past papers, course notes, and consultation to plan topics in the order most likely to have the greatest impact within the time available.

Client Reviews

Josh is incredibly helpful at explaining the tricky parts of problems and is quick to understand my difficulties and where i stand on certain equations and help me.

- Maths

Very helpful , going through concepts at a good pace offers expansion when needed.

- Mechanical Engineering

above and beyond
so helpful, tysm
not only do i have concrete advice to go off, but I have a more positive outlook on my growth too

- Physics

I found the lesson very helpful and relevant. Looking forward to applying what I have learnt to more questions. Knowledgeable and was able to assist with my various queries.

Testimonials

Campbell Donnelly

I found The Profs on a Google search. I needed help with maths for my Mechanical Engineering Degree, as I had completely lost confidence in my ability to do maths.   Dr Joshua Bannister worked through problems with me, gave me problems to work through and addressed any knowledge gaps he identified in this process. My confidence grew, and I felt better about maths. He did a really good job understanding my dyslexia and other issues. His excellent lessons helped to improve my grade massively. I highly recommend Joshua Bannister

Helped a biology student pass a 3rd-year PDEs Course.

I'm a master's biodata student who somehow found myself doing 3rd-year partial differential equations module, despite having not done maths since A-levels. I, of course, failed my first exam, which is where Joshua stepped in. Within 2 months, Joshua taught me more than any of the professors I'd had at uni could in a year, and went above and beyond to fit me into his already busy schedule, with each lesson tailored around my lecture notes and past exams to help me revise. Lo and behold, I passed the resit, which I truly believe would have been impossible without Joshua's help!

Dr. Joshua Bannister helped me with fluid mechanics and explained concepts intuitively. he also helped me with understanding how exams are structured and what examiners are looking for in solutions. this helped me with my exam technique. he is also lots of help explaining how masters degrees work and the best possible way to do the applications.

Brilliant and In-depth Mathematics Tutoring

As someone with a purely Computer Science background, I sought to master the mathematical foundations of Machine Learning, that required a deep understanding of graduate-level Mathematics spanning numerical analysis, functional analysis, and beyond. Under Dr. Joshua Bannister’s expert guidance, I progressed seamlessly from core principles to the confident comprehension of complex, cutting-edge research papers. Rather than adhering to a fixed syllabus, Dr. Bannister crafted a tailored curriculum perfectly aligned with my individual needs and pace. His flexibility, depth of insight, and unwavering support have been instrumental to my academic growth. I highly recommend Dr. Joshua Bannister to anyone seeking tutoring or any kind of academic mentorship

Kenneth Chee

I was tutored by Joshua Bannister, and he explained the topics in great detail, and is an amazing and friendly tutor. He’s experienced and knows his stuff, as well as providing extra knowledge for better understanding or even applications in real world. Thanks to him I understood my module way better than before, and it helped me greatly in my exams.

Octavia Leahy

Joshua Bannister helped me with Maths going into my Master's. He was an excellent teacher, covering topics at a great pace and making detailed notes for me to take away with me. He was very responsive and went above and beyond to support me and provide extra study materials. Very grateful for his help. Thank you, Josh!

Ryan

Joshua was brilliant with me. From the moment I told him what we needed to accomplish, within a short time, he had a set plan on how we would achieve this.

I really struggled with the content for my Numerical Analysis exam, so I looked to hire a tutor from The Profs to help me with my resits. I couldn't have asked for a better tutor, as Joshua's in-depth knowledge of Numerical Analysis helped me understand the module and pass my resits. I understood more with Joshua than I ever did during my actual lectures.

Vivian Guo

Dr Joshua Bannister was super helpful and knowledgeable. He was able to help me prep thoroughly during my Probability course. Would definitely recommend him!
