I am a PhD researcher in Philosophy, I am also employed as a Graduate Tutor with the University of Cardiff. I thoroughly enjoy teaching philosophy at undergraduate level for the university, and privately at Undergraduate and A Level. Due to the nature of philosophy, I stand to learn from my students just as they will learn from me, making the process deeply rewarding on both ends.

When I first studied philosophy at A Level, I knew that the course of my life would change. I immediately took to the subject; I found the openness of the lines of questioning and the long (even ancient!) history of it exciting. Once I started studying philosophy at University I quickly realized that I would pursue a career in academia/Higher Education. I'm happy with the opportunities for learning and teaching that have been available to me since.
As a teacher, my ethos is fairly simple. First, people learn about things far, far more effectively if they are interested in the subject. Second, there is absolutely no reason why philosophy, sociology or religious studies should be boring. If it is, it's almost always the responsibility of the teacher to continue tailoring their approach to the student. Thousands of years of accumulated wisdom can and should be relatable to a young person learning about - and establishing themselves within - the world.
After my first year of PhD research, I took on the role of Graduate Tutor for Cardiff University's undergraduate module 'Philosophy Through Film and Fiction'. My responsibilities included running the seminars, but also marking assignments and offering age-relevant pastoral support. This was a fantastic experience as I developed a strong rapport with my students and, although I was the teacher, I also learned a lot myself. In September 2024 I will assume the same role for the module 'Debates in the History of Philosophy'.
I have worked as a private tutor, both online and in-person, since December 2023. My own research focuses on the interaction between the history of philosophy, the historical development of Christianity, and the impact of these traditions on contemporary concerns with mental health and well-being. This has allowed me to tutor Religious Studies and Sociology, alongside Philosophy, to a high standard and with a wealth of important contextual knowledge. Tutoring privately is a great experience because my positive impact is often more visible; watching a student become more engaged with a subject or topic they initially found overwhelming or boring is a joy.
I have also intermittently volunteered for a Sexual and Domestic Violence charity who run an offshoot service that offers programs in school on non-academic subjects such as sexual and mental health, interpersonal skills and online safety. While this has less direct bearing on the academic side of private tutoring, considerations in these areas are important for supportive and considerate relationships with the young people I tutor.
Finally, I am enrolled on the 'Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy' (AFHEA), which is a teacher training course tailored to staff in Higher Education.

"Joe has been an excellent tutor. He took the time to get to know our son and has been able to support and challenge him in his English language revision. He is very friendly, professional and helpful. Our son has found his sessions with Joe to be informative and supportive and now feels much more confident going into his GCSE. Thanks, Joe." - GSCE English Language student
"Our daughter has secured her place at Exeter University- she achieved a great grade in her RS thanks to Joe Chapman. He is an excellent tutor and would highly recommend him with his patience and his teaching strategies. Also, his ability to give her confidence in her own abilities and to extend her skills to explain and develop her viewpoints for the subject area that he specialises in and she needed support with." - A2 Religious Studies student
"Joe has recently started tutoring my 15 year old son in English. He is professional, enthusiastic and engaging and has found a way to spark an interest in poetry in my son that I would never have expected! My son has enjoyed all the lessons he has had so far, is looking forward to the next one already and I can see his confidence growing, so I would have no hesitation in recommending Joe to anyone looking for help preparing for upcoming GCSEs. Thank you Joe!" - GCSE English Literature & Language student
