I have always loved studying English Literature and am passionate about my subject. Having gained a First Class degree at the University of Birmingham, I stayed on to complete a Masters and then a PhD, which I thoroughly enjoyed. While at university, I became qualified to teach undergraduates, and this sparked my love of teaching. I was accepted into the highly competitive and prestigious King Edward's Consortium teacher training programme, and qualified as 'outstanding'. I have been a fully qualified teacher for 7 years now, and genuinely love teaching all levels and qualifications, as I enjoy helping pupils to make progress. Tutoring is a special love of mine, because you can help a pupil make huge progress in a short amount of time, due to the beneficial nature of one-to-one teaching.
As well as reading widely, and being experienced in teaching across different exam boards, I am an experienced GCSE examiner, which means that I can offer key insights into the exam process.
I began tutoring students to fund my PhD in English Literature, and I taught a range of syllabuses (OCR, AQA, CCEA, EDEXCEL) and levels (KS2, KS3, GCSE, A-Level and degree). In 2011, I became a Learning Mentor at a top grammar school in Birmingham - King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls - where I helped GCSE students with revision and study techniques, and supported those who had problems revising.
Fuelled by my love of tutoring, I trained to become a teacher, graduating from the King Edwards Consortium (which was rated `Outstanding` by Ofsted) in 2012. I completed my training at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, before taking up a teaching position at Oakham School in 2013. At Oakham, I have taught A-Level English Literature, IB, GCSE and KS3 classes.
I am passionate about all aspects of teaching English, but particularly enjoy helping students to develop the craft of writing in order to express their ideas and views more carefully and clearly. As an experienced GCSE examiner, I also know how to help students express their ideas in a way which will gain them valuable marks. Furthermore, I am fully trained to teach the IB, having attended numerous certified workshops.
I am an experienced GCSE and A-Level examiner: IGCSE Edexcel English Language; OCR English Literature A-Level; and CIE English Literature A-Level.
Overall, I am an enthusiastic, caring, and motivational teacher: I inspire my students to achieve their potential, and I work hard to develop their self-confidence, which is key to success.
Having gained a PhD, I am classed as an expert in my field, and this, along with my first class degree and Masters, attests to my excellent subject knowledge. I write articles for A-Level Magazines and have presented papers at academic conferences.
Because I have tutored for over 15 years, and taught in three schools for the last 10 years, I have an in-depth knowledge of a huge selection of texts, as well as knowledge of the different exam boards and question types. I am an experienced iGCSE Edexcel English Language examiner, and an experienced OCR A-Level English Literature and CIE English Literature examiner.
As a fully qualified teacher, who currently teaches in a school, my knowledge of pedagogical approaches, as well as exam texts, is up to date and finely honed.
For university level subject knowledge, I am most experienced in teaching Romanticism, Victorian literature and Modernist literature. For A-Level, I am most experienced in teaching the Gothic, Dystopian, and Women in Literature literature, T. S. Eliot, and 'Paradise Lost'. I have taught and tutored: AQA, OCR and Edexcel specifications. For the IB, I have taught a huge range of contemporary texts and texts in translation, and I have taught at Standard and Higher Levels, for Lit Lang and Lit. For GCSE, I have tutored the AQA and IGCSE Edexcel syllabuses (teaching 'Lord of the Flies', 'An Inspector Calls', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Macbeth', 'A Christmas Carol', 'Jekyll and Hyde', 'Of Mice and Men', 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.)
I am also an experienced UCAS tutor, and can help advise on Personal Statements and SAQs, as well as interview prep. Furthermore, I am my department's Oxbridge Mentor, which involves preparing students for their ELATs and interviews.

Alice is very reliable and always help me so much. She is giving me very good pointers, help in terms of a structure and because of her hard work and support, my grades are improved. Thank you Alice!
Alice is a wonderful tutor.-She is very organised and prepares each lesson very well with her original material. My son had not been keen on GSCE English literature before he started lessons with Alice, however, we can already see a lot of progress in his positive attitude towards and understanding of English literature after only four productive lessons! We highly recommend Alice for students who would like to quickly move forward in English!
We, my kid and I, are very pleased to find Alice as her English tutor. She is very clear on her guides for what a student needs to improve thus very helpful.
Alice is the kindest and most helpful teacher! She was amazing help on guiding and making me understand how the EE works!
Hi Alice, hope you are well, I just wanted to thank you for the help you gave my son last year, sorry it comes so late but I had lost the link! FYI Tomasi was very excited to get an 8 on his oral. A job well done! I hope you can help him again next time!
Hi Alice, Thank you very much again for giving Ben the very productive lessons last week. Ben was very happy to receive your lessons and I could see he has gained more confidence in English even in this short time. I am very grateful for your help with his revision. Ben is taking his English tests today, so we will let you know how they went after he gets his results!
My AQA student, who I am currently tutoring, went from Levels 5 and 7 in their summer exams to 8 and 9 in their December mocks, whcih attests to their superb progress following a weekly tuition slot. We are currently preparing for his A-Level in September by doing general study skills and exploration of the Gothic genre. His mother wrote to me to say: 'I know that Seb told you his mock results on Tues. I just wanted to say thank you from us. He has gone from a 5 and a 7 in the summer to an 8 and a 9 in December. A huge jump. You have made a huge difference - thank you very much."
As an experienced Upper School tutor, I have overseen the UCAS process for my students and helped with Personal Statements, SAQs, ELATs and interviews. My most recent student wrote to tell me: "I thought I should pop you an email letting you know that I just received my first offer from Durham! I’m really pleased and I couldn’t have done any of this application process without tour help and guidance. "
I have also finished tutoring an IOB student, and her father wrote to say: "I wanted to let you know that Karin was accepted at the University of Stirling, Scotland, UK and began her studies a week ago (Bachelor of Arts Honors Psychology). She graduated high school with an Honors mention ('Assez-bien') and did well in her English language subjects, covering the required conditions for acceptance at Stirling. I would like to thank you very much for your help and encouragement, as well as for stimulating Karin to do better, I appreciate that highly. Thank you again!"
Last summer, I finished tutoring a GCSE student, and I have continued to tutor him for his IB course (English at Standard Level). His mother wrote to me after his results to say: "I hope this message finds you well. Theo let you know about his GCSE results and I want to add that I am very happy for him concerning his results in English language and literature. The 9 in English literature is a remarkable achievement and I consider this is a proof to himself that he could excel in English as well. I was unable to write you earlier and now I want to let you know that I am grateful for all your help and dedication which contributed a lot to honing and enhancing his abilities in such a short period of time before the exams. Thank you so very much!"
As an experienced Oxbridge tutor, I have had great success in preparing students for sitting their ELATs and Oxbridge interviews. My most recent student wrote to tell me that she received her ELAT results: " I scored 56/60 in the ELAT which actually gives me one of the highest scores in the world out of all applicants to both Oxford and Cambridge". When I first taught her, she had only managed to score in the 30s! She came to me having gained a Level 5 in her HL English IB course, and I tutored her for her resits, where she achieved a Level 7.
