About Me

I am currently a senior manager of the Legal interpretation unit with the Customs and Excise strategy and Legal Policy division of the South African Revenue Service (SARS). I have more than twenty-five years of work experience within various customs and excise units. I have occupied various roles within the SARS, some of those notable roles include Team Leader Anti-Smuggling team, Customs and Excise Intelligence Analyst, Specialist Customs and Excise Legal Advice, Manager Customs and Excise Legal Advice and senior manager Legal Interpretation. I am an advocate of the High Court of South Africa. I am an affiliate of the Legal Practice Council and a member of the National Forum of Advocates (Bar Association). This professional experience contributes a lot in linking the academic stream of learning with the experience needed in the practice of the law. I specialise in criminal and procedural law, evidence and international tax and customs & trade law. My research interests in the area of tax include transfer pricing, profit shifting, tax avoidance, tax havens, customs valuation, rules of origin, tariff determinations.

Tutor Experience

My teaching experience started at the University of South Africa in 2017 when I was appointed as a face-to-face Tutor for various law subjects. I have been a face-to-face tutor since then to date. In 2022 I have also been appointed to teach company law in the University of the Witwatersrand. I am also visiting lecturer at the University of Pretoria where I teach international trade law. I also help masters and doctoral students with guidance on their research, especially relating to research methodology, structure of dissertations, editing and proof reading. My duties include but not limited to:
i. Facilitate delivery of tutorials within the prescribed timeframes.
ii. Manage students’ face to face and virtual learning experiences.
iii. Facilitate students’ interactions with their peers.
iv. Simplify technical and complicated subject matters in the module.
v. Act as a liaison between the university and the students.
vi. Provide students with the required academic support in relation to their course work viz: assignments and preparations for examinations.

The philosophy of my teaching statement is to produce a well-rounded lawyer with life-long practical skills required of an effective lawyer. That is why I have over the years transcended from focusing from mere academic teaching to a vocationally infused training of a future legal practitioner or academic. My main aim has always been to help students experience the world more richly, beyond the world of textbooks and inert facts. As prospective legal professionals, I believe that my students should be highly critical and constructive, more especially in light of the fact that this is the world they will encounter when they venture into practice or academia. Lawyers are forever engaged in the process of identifying relevant issues and relevant applicable legal principles from a hotchpotch of incredible scenarios or factual situations, therefore teaching them from a practical perspective is imperative.

Topic Expertise

I can teach any law subjects, but my area of expertise is criminal law, medical law, law of delicts, international trade law, company law and business-related courses like ethics, operational management and international business studies. I also specialise in research methodology and how to write good academic papers and dissertations. I specifically help with the structure of the paper, editing, proof reading and constructive criticism of the text.
