Graduated with first class honours in an integrated masters at Biomedical science at Cardiff University, specialising in tissue engineering, growing bone tissue using human stem cells in 3D culture as part of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis research. Although I am focusing on this specific area at the moment, I love all areas of biology from plants to animals as well as humans. Biology was my favourite subject in school and I am very passionate about it. I enjoyed revising for exams, I love to make 'pretty' notes so that they are easy to revise from. For me, using pictures and annotated diagrams is the best way to learn. I am a visual learner and I think it makes it easier to grasp things if it is explained in pictures rather than just words. To help my students improve I don't mind taking time to draw diagrams and explaining them. I am armed with examples and past paper questions on all topics. I understand the importance of sticking to a specification and having a high level of organisation to my notes and revision. I will teach from the exam board specification to make sure that we don't miss any subject areas out and that my students are fully prepared for the exams. The most important thing for me is that my students gain something valuable from the tutorial session, which will ultimately help them be successful in their exams.
I've been a private tutor for 4 years and have also worked alongside schools to deliver 1-1 tuition to disadvantaged pupils. I've had many results day successes and great reviews from students. The way I will structure my tutorials is down to the student, we will do what ever is best to help them learn. At the start of the tutorial I will always listen to the student to find out what they need help with and we will go from there. I will spend time before the tutorial preparing materials. For example, drawing diagrams to help me explain a concept. I will research the exam board's style of exams, looking at past papers and putting together practice questions that we can work through together so students have experience of how to answer questions correctly to gain the full amount of marks. This will also be a way for me to measure students progress and see how they are coming along. Most importantly, my tutorials will not be boring! I know from experience that there is nothing worse than being stuck in a classroom listening to a teacher talking in a monotone. It makes it very easy to lose attention and for your mind to wonder. I will make sure that my tutorials are interesting and captivating, something different from the normal classroom experience.
For biology and chemistry GCSE and international GCSE I have experience teaching all exam boards and papers, I will always research a specification in detail before starting the lesson. For A-Level Biology I can teach all exam boards and papers, but most expert in WJEC where all my students have achieved A* grades in the last 2 years.
