A patient, supportive and compassionate educator with a drive for making a difference to lives by employing knowledge, experience, empathy and enthusiasm for science education.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Derby I inspired and facilitated learning in biology and forensic science. I started out wanting to be a biologist but diverted through chemistry, a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry for over 30 years! My research at Derby was the in-use stability of protein-based drugs which informed clinical practise. My experience has given me a valuable perspective on learning chemistry for biologists.
I am also an enthusiastic musician; classical and jazz guitar.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Derby I taught biology and forensic science degree students individually and in groups. Teaching comprised of tutorials, lectures and assisting students during practical sessions. I also have experience of writing exam questions and marking; giving thorough feedback.
Additionally, I have some school and STEM outreach experience.
My approach to teaching is informed by my experience from varied industrial and academic roles. My pedagogical approach is to adapt material to the specific needs of a student and develop metacognitive skills to allow organisation and evaluation of thought processes related to learning and problem solving.
