Recent Research Methods Undergraduate Tutor Class Reviews

Dr Steve - Suzanne- Research Methods - Undergraduate
Monday April 2025
Update on progress and what is now completed. Discovering reflective supervision in schools as a movement and how this has impacted the literature review - processing this with Dr Steve. Moving onto analysis - first obstacle seems to be the coding that research supervisors feel is "too convenient" . Processing this with Steve to see where I stand on this.

Monday March 2025
Excellent session. Reporting on progress so far over the past month- chapters 1 and 2 revised, and a reflective piece written. All sent to research supervisors. Completed a sweep of literature review in the meantime and will do another sweep then send to supervisors with the reflective piece yet to be written. Methodology next. Focussing today on chapter 5 - the analysis and delineating what is reporting, what is analysis, what is discussion. Talking this through for the first time so will need to revisit it next time. Dr Steve knows it takes me quite a while for a complex idea to land and we agreed to talk about this again until it lands. In the meantime I will read these sections in multiple papers and report back my progress next time, and then talk through my understanding on these sections. Very helpful explanations.

Monday February 2025
Update on progress and a realisation following a colleague, on the brink of submission, stating: "I hate my thesis". Following reflections on this very powerful statement deciding to add a reflective piece, that verges on the anecdotal, to provide a space for the less scholarly and the more personal/experiential. Going through the content of this piece. Moving on to chapter 2 - the context and working out a structure and a "middle path".

Monday January 2025
Excellent class. Going through the written feedback given by research supervisors - clarifying areas I was in total agreement with, and other areas that were contradictory, confusing and not in alignment with my thinking/writing. I have arranged to speak to them more regularly for further precise clarification. Beyond "grounding" that feedback, going through broadly feedback from Dr Steve which was clear, on point and helpful. Finally, clarifying exactly what the difference is between analysis/findings and discussion. Much clearer on this now, and feel less confused and certainly less overwhelmed by the task list ahead. Really helpful to talk this all through and have clarification. Thank you.

The best in statistical analysis. I highly recommend
Dr Steve - Suzanne- Research Methods - Undergraduate
Monday December 2024
Discussing in fine detail the conclusion and what belongs in there, what detail, whose voice etc and dispelling my misconceptions and misunderstandings. Arranging for me to send my first draft of conclusion for marking before our next meeting. Very helpful to talk it all through.

Monday November 2024
Talking through progress in last month - have edited 5 chapters and "lost" 15,000 words. This follows a directive from my research supervisors to 1. Edit and 2. Send all 5 chapters to them by mid December. Talking through the process with Dr. Steve. Asking grammatical questions such as indenting and the protocol, headings and the protocol. Preparing for the future in our work together - negotiating the marking of the draft conclusion once it is written (post the sending of 5 chapters to supervisors). Will send first draft of conclusion by January to Dr Steve two weeks before our January meeting. Updating on my positionality re the viva and dates for it. Discussing spending our sessions as of February 2025 as mini vivas for the ensuing months post end of January. Discussing the structure of the conclusion and what goes where. The importance of The Lampton Worm to my process - an' it grew, an' it grew, an' it grew, an' it grew, an' it grew to an aaful size, t'ad geet big teeth and geet big nose and geet big goggly eyes...

Ruwayda is very helpful and allowed me to understand the concept of mediation and logistic regression. The session was very effective

Monday October 2024
Excellent session helping me to understand the structure and content of the various parts of the methodology section. I think I had got entangled with having all the components in place, but they were somewhat mixed up and needed ordering which we did together. Also the doing of the research was in a separate section and Dr Steve helped me ensure that the theory came first as an explanation of what I was going to do, and it needs to be followed immediately by WHAT I did in practice. Really good session and very helpful, encouraging and supportive. Thank you.

Monday September 2024
Updating Dr Steve on my progress. I have sent the conceptual framework (which was the key to understanding the data analysis) to supervisors with a few changes recommended. I have moved fully now into the data analysis. Discussing all of this with DFr Steve and the structuring of certain parts where I was unsure. Talking through the subconclusion to the findings and analysis and what belongs there, and what goes into the final conclusion. Very helpful to have this clarity.
