Alexander - Jessica- Research Methods - Undergraduate
Thursday May 2026
Alex was super helpful and explained things in a very digestible way. He did have some technical issues, but he handled them all very well and still ensured he covered all the topics we set out to cover. Will definitely be keen to work with him again!

Debriefing having passed the viva. I would highly recommend Dr Steve as a tutor and have found his help invaluable.

Thursday February 2026
Mini viva and discussing my answers - advice and guidance on how to reword, rephrase and/or approach my responses. Excellent advice and session.

Monday January 2026
Update on the pre-submission journey and flagging up how my supervisors have circumvented the GRIP (2022) protocol - processing the fallout for me as I am now in a position of having to turn around the feedback quickly in order to give my examiners enough time prior to the viva. Advice from Steve to check with the PGR centre about soft copy availability/provision for the examiners. Processing some of the supervisor feedback today with Steve. Very helpful session.

Thursday December 2025
Updating Dr Steve on having completed the theissi and it has been sent to supervisors. Raising the 8 week reading time which my supervisors said was too generous. Dr Steve raised a very valid point - the PGR admin are the people to decide a reasonable reading time and not the supervisors. I will contact the PGR services to query. Dr Steve asking me a few viva questions. Homework - to think about a couple of questions Dr Steve posed. Very helpful session.

Monday November 2025
Update on my progress - nearly ready to submit. Planning with Dr Steve to have general viva questions moving forward for the next three sessions we have planned (December, January and February). Started a mini viva - Steve pointing out the difference between being defensive and engaging in answering the questions in an interested/curious/ exploratory/ justifying way. Very helpful to have my defensiveness pointed out and we will work on this moving forward as it could be a sticky point.

Thursday October 2025
Exploring what I might call "bits and bobs" of the research - eg. referencing queries, present/past tense writing. Updating Dr Steve on my progress re the editing. Dr Steve asked me a couple of questions that are viva centred and we will pick the viva preparation last time as all the other bits and bobs needed clarifying first. Very good and helpful dialogue.

Monday September 2025
Excellent session. The first of our mini vivas, today we started with chapter 1 and Steve guided me through the sort of questions I might be asked, areas that could set me up for a fall and aspects that need some revision to content/wording.

Monday September 2025
Update on progress my end - now in the "ruthless editing stage", supervisors have the discussion chapter, the reflective piece and the conclusion. Processing the lack (again) of the supervisors holding my work in mind, and how it is spurring me on to just do it all regardless, without their academic support. Discussing the process of the viva, my timeline for submission and the lack of independent reader. Planning for 5 mini vivas with Dr Steve between now and submission. Very good session and very helpful.

Monday August 2025
Update on progress and obstacles encountered (some of which were me getting in my own way and overthinking and/or "holding" too much information. Going throughthe process of the discussion and how I am scaffolding all the elements that need to be included. External examiner - mismatch of who is choosing them- Dr Steve suggested, very wisely, to go back to the handbook for a definitive answer. Revisiting the RQ and aims. Wondering if I could create a table of the gaps to put in the analysis/discussion? Dr Steve showed me some examples from his thesis - and suggested I include some retrospective reflection in my table. Excellent session - very helpful indeed.
Dr Steve - Suzanne- Research Methods - Undergraduate
Monday July 2025
Checking in with where I am at in the thesis writing. Then, onto the mini viva/viva preparation for the remainder of the session today. Dr Steve posing some poignant questions that caused us to "step out of the min viva" and discuss and clarify. Dr Steve also answering operational questions regarding the process of the viva (for example I had no idea the thesis goes to an independent reader before submission). Very, very helpful session and thought provoking. Learning from this session will clarify my editing.
