I'm a Cambridge Maths graduate, who always knew he loved maths as a field. I like to think this love shows through when I teach as well, and that it helps to fight back against all the students who've been wronged by maths and bad maths teachers alike.
My teaching style generally is based on the Socratic method with tough exam style questions for problem solving, as I believe the neglect of the reasoning behind the methods students use for maths is part of where a lot of difficulty comes from in the long term.
I value personal growth in each student over their specific grade goals; limiting oneself to “getting an A*” and not attempting anything harder than necessary prioritises memorisation, and not improving one’s understanding of the fundamentals. While they may not believe it at first, I’ve found each student benefits from aiming for their greatest performance level instead of their required performance level, with the exception of very short period tutoring (e.g. starting 2 weeks before an exam).
I have been a full-time tutor for around 3 years now, accumulating roughly 5000 hours of tuition experience in sciences (primarily physics and chemistry) and maths. I have a love for learning maths, but also a love of showing others the joy there is to be found in maths, given how many people feel genuine stress from the maths they have to do in school. My personal philosophy is that this is due to poor teaching or attitudes ingrained earlier in life, but that they can be undone by proper encouragement and enthusiasm.
I’ve had experience teaching students from many different backgrounds; I’ve worked with people for all major exam boards for GCSE and A Level maths and physics, including all 4 IB forms, and multiple students for maths super-curriculars like the UKMT competitions and university admissions (Oxbridge interviews, MAT, TMUA, STEP, PAT, ESAT). I’ve also helped students with maths sections of 11+, 13+ and 16+, as well as at the university level of mathematics and statistics. I've had personal experience with many of these, and my experience at Cambridge has helped my support students with their applications for Cambridge Maths.
