About Me

My name is John and I am a professional mathematician who has worked both in the public and private sectors as a university professor and as a scientific consultant. For the last five years, I have been living in the south of France, concentrating on my mathematical research and enjoying a complete change of pace. I have recently returned to the UK and would like to tutor a select group of students.

I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Leeds for my work on coupled chemical oscillators. During my career, I have written 4 books and had 60 research articles published in leading scientific journals. In addition, I have supervised the research work of 7 PhD students and have been involved in the supervision of MSc and undergraduate projects. I specialise in interdisciplinary research, specifically the analysis of mathematical models arising from engineering, chemical reactions, biological systems and theoretical physics.

Tutor Experience

I have twenty-five years of teaching experience as a university professor, including lecturing, small group tutorials and one-to-one tuition.

Topic Expertise

I am an applied mathematician by training, and can provide tutoring in mathematics from school to postgraduate level.

I am well prepared to tutor GCSE, IGCSE, IB, A-Level, and Further Mathematics.

I could also tutor on a wide range of applied mathematical topics at undergraduate level, including:

Advanced calculus
Linear algebra
Matrix methods
Vector analysis
Complex analysis
Classical dynamics
Mathematical methods in theoretical physics
Linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs)
Partial differential equations (PDEs)
Dynamical systems
Asymptotic methods
Mathematical biology
Mathematical modelling
Engineering mathematics
Fluid dynamics
Linear and nonlinear waves

The above list is not exhaustive and if your area of interest does not appear on it please contact me.

Client Reviews

John, has been a fantastic tutor for Tom. He is prepared to approach Tom’s dyslexic challenges with maths in multiple different ways. John has managed to increase Tom’s confidence and self belief which are vital for approaching tricky maths questions. Thanks so much John.

very helpful tutor, explained the topics well and helped me with my exam prep

- Maths

Went through material and example questions to prep for exam. Very helpful.

- Maths

This tutor has been incredibly helpful in preparing me for my exam. Despite limited time, we covered a lot of material with clear explanations and examples. They were patient and attentive to my questions, which has given me more confidence going into the exam. I highly recommend this tutor.

- Maths: Analysis and Approaches

With just a couple of hours of notice and basically no lecture notes for my Undergraduate Differential Equations class, Dr. John accepted my tutoring request and prepared me for my exam. 100% recommended. Dr. John knows his math and will give very simple and straightforward explanations to complex problems. He is very cautious by making sure you are understanding the problem as he goes along explaining it.

The feedback was pretty good! I think that it could have gone into a little more depth for the price paid. However, all the feedback was relevant and helped me improve my work. It was clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much Mr. John!
