During his tutoring career, Rahul has successfully prepared students for 7+, 11+ and 13+ entrance exams at top London schools such as Dulwich College, City of London, Bute House, JAGS, and Alleyn’s. He also works as a specialist subject tutor across a wide range of (I)GCSE, A Level, and IB exam boards. In particular, he has a wealth of experience offering Maths and English support up to GCSE level, French to IB/A level, as well as History up to undergraduate level (references available on request).
Rahul believes that getting to know the young person behind the student is key to understanding how best to engage their interest in the material. From the outset, he creates a friendly atmosphere that emphasises the importance of dialogue to the teaching process. Students are encouraged to actively ask questions and not be afraid to make mistakes. This develops their confidence, as well as nurturing their intellectual curiosity and passion for the subject. Rather than lecturing them (and quickly losing their attention!), he tries as far as possible to guide their understanding from what they already know to more challenging material – encouraging them to share their own thoughts and ideas. He challenges them to explain what they think and why they think it, offering constructive feedback throughout this learning process. This Oxbridge-style tutorial format leads to deeper understanding of assessed material, as well as developing the crucial ability to think critically.
Beyond rote learning, the key to success is often confidence and academic maturity; and Rahul specialises in cultivating a sharp, creative and adaptable mindset in your child. Helping them become inquisitive and independent thinkers lays strong foundations for long term success not just in academia, but in life.
Rahul has over 7 years experience tutoring a wide range of subjects and levels with great success. He holds a First Class Honours degree in History from Durham, and an MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History from the University of Cambridge. He has also recently completed the prestigious TeachFirst program, from which he qualified as an ‘Outstanding Teacher’, teaching Humanities at Oasis Academy Wintringham. In 2021, he graduated with Distinction from his Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Rahul’s approach to planning and delivering bespoke tuition programs is therefore informed by the latest research on pedagogical best practice, as well as his wealth of experience.
I have a range of experience and expertise across a wide range of subjects.
In particular, I specialise in offering structured support for coursework essays, longer research projects, as well as exam preparation and technique up to undergraduate level. Whether you need support with content retention and understanding, or structuring and expressing your arguments in a more sophisticated way, I can help you achieve your goals.
Rahul has been extremely helpful in developing my understanding of challenging assignments. He has a brilliant way of simplifying complex materials while providing ways to improve my writing skills. I am very pleased with my sessions so far and consider Rahul to be a great teacher.
‘Rahul really went above and beyond in our lessons. He offered clear advice helping me to fine tune my writing structure, and offered regular written feedback with easy to follow guidance on how to improve. He had a way of making me feel good about the work that I was producing, giving me a much needed confidence boost which helped me achieve an A*!’
Lauren (History A Level student)
'Rahul has been of great help in preparing the GCSEs with our 16 year old son. He stayed with us at home in Germany for two weeks in 2019 during Easter Holiday and covered most of the required subjects (History, Maths, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics), which was of course a great help. He meticulously organized each day’s work between all the different subjects and also could change the focus when needed. He was working around 6 lessons per day. His enormous effort with Philipp paid off as his GCSE Grades in these subjects all went up from the mock exams results (especially in English from 3 to 7, Maths from 4 to 7, History 4 to 7). His focus was from teaching/revising content to also improve the subject related techniques to collect the important points during the exam.
Rahul has an amazing way to stay friendly and patient and be helpful - he is such a kind character. And he is really trying to understand the child and his specific situation. He is really engaged to get forward and motivate and assist wherever he can. And he has his tricks and timings to make even the reluctant child work during these long days. He was always fun to have in the house and around, and most wonderfully he played tennis as well, so they could have fun on the court from time to time.
Thank you Rahul for your great work and help!'
Tina (Parent of GCSE student/mentee)
‘Rahul was a very positive influence on our daughter. He was methodical, explained his plan to us clearly and conducted his lessons in a manner that was enjoyable for a young child as well as honed her skills that would be helpful in the longer term. He was very knowledgeable about the expectations from that age group and the overall subject matter. With his help, our daughter did very well in her 7+, receiving offers from JAGs, Alleyns and Eltham College.’
Sarika (Parent of 7+ student)
“Rahul has a real passion for teaching and has been truly exemplary. Having used a number of tutors in the past it was clear to immediately identify Rahul as a stand out tutor who is very committed. His natural ability to engage his students and build their confidence through his lessons is second to none. He is organised and able to identify key areas of improvement and instil confidence. As a result we’ve seen a substantial improvement in our son’s school work and engagement, and he is well placed to tackle his 11+ exams at Dulwich College”
Akin (Parent of 11+ student)
'Rahul helped me enormously with my writing and analytical structure. He was friendly and attentive, tutoring me over FaceTime, and was very helpful when it came to organising material and knowledge for exams. I would be very happy to use him again for help with university history and politics, and thoroughly recommend him.'
Matt (Undergraduate History and Politics)
‘Rahul taught Louis, our son, GCSE Maths for around 8 months, and was brilliant. We can’t recommend him enough – he had a great relationship with Louis, who thoroughly enjoyed his lessons. He made the lessons interesting – even Maths was made fun! Louis was capable at Maths but not brilliant, and inspired by Rahul, he came out with a Level 6 which he worked very hard for, and was extremely proud of. Feel free to give us a call if you’d like to discuss him further – we would recommend Rahul highly!
Matthew (Parent of Maths GCSE student)
'Rahul harbours an obvious passion for learning and sharing knowledge. He was always enthusiastic and accommodating when it came to discussing essay plans, supporting my revision, and clarifying various academic debates. He has a talent for making learning enjoyable and memorable.'
Jess (Undergraduate History)
'Rahul has been a massive help in supporting me - I don't think I would understand half the stuff my English teacher talks about without him!'
Elliot (English GCSE student)
'Rahul is an inspirational and accomplished tutor. He immediately gave Sophie some much needed confidence in her ability to tackle source work, and I am very pleased with how sessions are going'.
