I received my Master’s in Linguistics with Distinction at the University of Edinburgh. For my BA, I attended the University of British Columbia, where I achieved the equivalent of a UK First Class degree and a partial scholarship for those in the top 5% of their program.
My Master’s research explored language change and variation in different accents and dialects of English, and I have a strong background in phonetics and phonology. My experiences, on top of prior instruction, have led me to build strong academic writing and research skills that are applicable to a range of disciplines.
My approach to tutoring is student-centered: I appreciate how much learning styles differ from person to person, and I enjoy helping the people I work with find what approach works best for them. Part of what draws me to tutoring is helping people gain confidence, and knowing that needing accommodations or different approaches to learning does not reflect poorly on intelligence or capability. In fact, I believe that reaching out for additional help and communicating your needs to people shows strength and dedication! I design and pace my lessons at a rate that the student feels is most useful and comfortable. I encourage students to tell me if something is not working for them; there is nothing wrong with needing to take a pause or break. I have experience working with ADHD and anxiety in particular.
I have a background in private tutoring at university level in a range of areas such as Linguistics, English, Academic and Essay Writing, and Academic Research, as well as school tutoring for GCSEs. As an undergraduate, I was a peer tutor in linguistics, where I held office hours and review sessions for exams. I am able to communicate introductory material clearly to those with little or no background knowledge, and I am successful in working in more specialized areas as well. I always begin by assessing students’ needs, and I develop an appropriate pace on a case-by-case situation.
