About Me

I am a medically qualified anatomist, cell biologist and neurobiologist. I worked in south Wales hospitals and then became a cell biologist in Switzerland working at the world renowned Basel Biocenter, making discoveries of important new pathways and structures in the cell. Some of these discoveries have been published in Nature magazine and were also publicised in interviews on breakfast TV. I have published more than 130 scientific papers and citations of my work exceed 28,000.

Throughout my career I have been committed, through teaching, to helping students understand the basics of biology, medicine and neuroscience as a springboard to success in both examinations and career skill development.

Tutor Experience

I have over 30 years of tutoring and lecturing experience, both online and offline, from big to small groups and also one to one. Working in English, French and German I have taught school students, medical and dental students as well as basic science students and done outreach sessions for non-specialist audiences in government institutions. I have been commended as one of the top teachers in my universities a number of times.

I have supervised more than 100 dissertations and laboratory projects in my lab and mentored a number of medical students toward successful transfers to universities such as Imperial College, Cambridge and Oxford university. I have taught for 30 years in small groups and 121 on international science courses in the area of biology. My focus recently as faculty member at UKs top-rated St Andrews university, has been to deliver and improve teaching in cell biology, neurobiology, neurology and tissue structure. I am deeply committed to helping students first understand the basic concepts before moving onto crucial details and interpretations, always scoping towards working comfortably on relevant exam papers. I have developed interactive online teaching resources utilising whiteboards, zoom, teams and nearpod for use in large, small and one to one teaching.
