I am a scientific researcher with a strong background in teaching. I am approachable and take the time to understand each student.
I began my teaching during my PhD where I guided undergraduate students through their laboratory work. Progressing to more a more formal teaching setting, I began teaching as a private tutor both in the classroom for group teaching and also one-to-one tutoring. This involved students working towards their GCSEs and A levels. After obtaining my PhD I took up a research position at the University of Nottingham, where I was given official teaching duties for undergraduate students of all years who were studying for degrees in Chemistry and Natural Sciences.
I then moved to the University of Manchester, where I have been for the last 3 years and have been heavily involved in teaching and taking up a teaching internship within the chemistry department and being awarded my official teaching qualification. Although my personal education has been in pure Chemistry, my research interests have led me into the more biological field, expanding my knowledge. I have experience and I am comfortable providing a high level of teaching for all sciences at GCSE, Biology and Chemistry at A level and Chemistry and Biochemistry at undergraduate level.
I currently teach undergraduate students guiding them through their set tutorials at University, which is a mixture of face-to-face and online learning. I have prior experience as a private tutor, where I spent a couple of years, whilst studying for my PhD in Organic Chemistry, guiding students through their science GCSEs and Chemistry/Biology A levels.
I try to ensure that current school teaching is supplemented instead of replaced. I encourage my students to touch base a couple of days prior to their tutor session to provide me with any materials (worksheets, questions etc...) that they have struggled with or topics in general they have learnt that week in school that they wish to recap and revisit. This ensures the lesson planned for them is unique to each student. This approach also ensures they are continually recapping their knowledge, allowing students to gain a great understanding of the topics they are learning.
I try to introduce exam style questions in each session, where we will together unpick what knowledge the question requires recall for and how best to formulate an answer. By including exam style questions early on in sessions (not just as we approach exams) students become more comfortable with applying their knowledge.
I received my official teaching qualification in higher education (Fellow in AdvancedHE) after attending a training course, followed by the assessment of my teaching portfolio.
All Chemistry subjects can be covered from GCSE up to Degree level.
All Biology subjects can be covered from GCSE to A level.
Physics subjects can be covered up to GCSE level.
Exam boards specifications I have taught to include Edexcel, AQA and OCR.
Academic writing not restricted to the science field. CV and cover letter writing.
She is the best tutor I have ever met
