About Me

I am a working academic historian, formerly a lecturer and admissions tutor at Oxford. I studied both History and English to BA level and went on to attain the MPhil and DPhil in History, focusing on Early Modern British History (16th-17th centuries). I provide Oxford-quality History and English tutorials at GCSE, A-Level, university or Masters/PhD level.

My experience teaching academic writing spans disciplines, and I can teach subject-specific lessons on historical theory and methods, social sciences research, digital humanities, English literature, theology, philosophy and gender studies.

My teaching philosophy is that students always perform better when they can accurately assess and correct their own work. My teaching aims to develop confidence in students by allowing them to practice their writing in a supportive and constructive environment. By focusing on communicating clearly with their reader, students can bring a new level of self-awareness and maturity to their written work. I specialise in uncovering the persuasive writer within every student!

In the first session, we will discuss your learning needs and the tutorial structure that would work best for you. If you already have writing projects, admissions materials or course assignments which you would like to work on, we can focus the tutorials on those. Alternatively, I can devise a tailored syllabus focused on developing your writing, alongside subject- or exam-specific skills.

I can teach and proofread writing in both UK and US English, and I'm happy to advise on the differences between these academic writing conventions if this is necessary for your writing. Likewise, I have experience with both UK and US university admissions and can help you tailor your applications accordingly.

Tutor Experience

Stats:
-2 years as academic advisor / personal tutor to 30 undergraduate History students, 4 Masters' students and 4 PhD students at an Oxford college; was asked to write reference letters for 3 Oxbridge MSt applications. 100% of my final-year students received 2:1s or First Class marks on their exams.

-4 years teaching History at Oxford and 2 years as an organising tutor, coordinating the delivery of History teaching at an Oxford college.

-100% of students who have worked with me on their Oxbridge MSt personal statements have been accepted to their programme of choice, and two received full funding.

-4 years as an Oxford admissions tutor: marking the HAT, conducting History interviews and making admissions decisions.

I have 10+ years of experience in teaching History, academic writing, study skills and English literature to students ranging from secondary school to Masters candidates. I took my first private tuition clients in 2013 and have been providing one-on-one tutorials alongside more formal academic seminars, classes and lecturing since then, both in-person and online.

Testimonials

'I wanted to email and say thank you so much for your help in my FHS. Your tutorials for my Brit paper were some of the best I received throughout my degree, and the help you gave me regarding my masters application was so valuable. I received my results last week and got a high 2.1, including a 69 in my Brit paper! My next steps are going to complete the MPhil in World History at Cambridge (or they will be, once the postgraduate admissions office reads my transcript!). I also received a funding offer from Cambridge!'

-Former Oxford student (anonymised)

'I felt very comfortable about contributing and she gave me further confidence whilst I answered by nodding and smiling (which sounds stupid but means a lot as a student!). I felt she was very well prepared for the classes (more than some other tutors).'
-Anonymous (student feedback form)

'Very clear and accessible discussion - it was both easy to understand and make me feel comfortable contributing to the discussion. Good balance of making points herself and letting students discuss the topic in question. '
