Seven years experience of tutoring.
Individualised and differentiated programmes of work subject to agreement with student including homework where appropriate.
Physics problems solved collaboratively.
Past paper practice.
Guidance and step by step help with returned mock exam papers.
I have tutored students studying Physics at a range of levels.
GCSE: OCR, AQA
A-Level: AQA, OCR A, OCR B, Edexcel
International Baccalaureate Higher Level
Oxford Physics Aptitude Test
Undergraduate (Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics)
I recently retired after 40 years teaching chemistry.
I was Head of Chemistry for 35 years and in Charge of Science for 22 years.
I won the 2016 Royal Society of Chemistry Education Award.
I have an extensive website and YouTube Channel to provide post lesson support.
For many years I was a home tutor of GCE Chemistry, using CCEA, AQA, OCR and EDEXCEL
Specifications. Over the last 2 years I have added the WJEC Specification.
Upon retirement I took up a senior position with the CCEA examining team for GCE Chemistry.
As a result I am unable to tutor students for that specification.
Comfortable with teaching online using the Spires platform,
I have an enormous bank of teaching and assessment resources available at the click of a mouse.
Thanks for you interest.
Sorry, but I do not offer trial sessions.
I have been a private tutor over the last five years or so, teaching biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and French at a range of levels from secondary up to A level standard. I have also taught the clarinet.
Some of my pupils in the past have been struggling or unmotivated and subsequently performed very well in their exams. One example was a girl who had failed her GCSE Mathematics (Lower Tier) and came to me to prepare for her retake. I gave her the confidence she needed and she passed with a 5, the highest possible score at Lower Tier.
I try to bring together different fields of study in my lessons and explain how they relate to one another. As a Natural Sciences graduate I can draw from my interdisciplinary knowledge of various biological, chemical, geological, environmental and mathematical topics. Thanks to a six-week-long exchange to a school near Paris, I am also reasonably fluent in French with a strong understanding of grammar and an appreciation of the French culture and colloquialism, while my interest in languages in general (I can also speak German and some Italian) allows me to understand the evolution and interconnections of language, and consequently to enrich my tutoring material. I will try to find ways not only to elucidate any problems students have, but hopefully to also allow them to appreciate the underlying meaning or beauty of these subjects.
I am currently holding a position of a Lecturer in Physics and Maths at one of London's best universities. Previously I taught 1st and 2nd year undergraduate Physics students as Senior demonstrator and supervisor at the University of cambridge. I have also been tutoring in person and online for over 2 years.
Durham Foundations Centre Problems Solving Instructor (2017-2019): Run a module for those undertaking the foundation year in Physics, offered by the Durham Centre for Academic Development (Durham University). Requires me to design the module and class work as well as writing and marking the final examination.
Durham level 1 Foundations of Physics tutor (2016-2019): Tutor for two groups of around 5 students. Requires me to guide them through a general first year physics course, teaching them problem solving skills in Physics. Also requires marking of weekly problem sheets.
Physics university level tuition ( 2014-2019) : In the latter years of my undergraduate I gave regular private tuition to students for level 2 university topics such as Quantum mechanics and Mathematics for physicists, furthermore, I also provided more irregular sessions to those who needed to attend resit examinations. During my PhD I have given tuition privately for level 3 studies, including subjects such as particle and nuclear physics as well as some Masters level courses on Quantum Field Theory and Particle Physics. The majority of these were in person, however I have given tuition online and have the capabilities to do so.
Introduction to Coding (Oct 2018): Designed and delivered an introduction course for the python coding language. This was attended by students enrolled in the Durham Foundations program.
Durham level 3 tutor (2015-2016): Workshop demonstrator for Theoretical Physics 3 at Durham University. Topics were relativistic electrodynamics, scattering theory in quantum mechanics and relativistic quantum mechanics.
Physics and Maths Private tutor A-Level (2014-2016): Various private roles as mathematics and physics tutor for high school students.
