Outside of tutoring I am a filmmaker and writer, and my articles appear regularly in British and American magazines.
While I was born in London and now live there again, I have spent stints in Cardiff and Berlin. My main passions are my wife and children, squash and playing the piano. Oh, and going on long walks – I love the West Highland Way and have walked it twice in five years.
I have been a professional tutor since 2006.
Across all of the different subjects I teach, I always notice the same thing: the main difficulty that learners encounter is getting overwhelmed by what they're trying to learn. It could be that there seems to be simply too much material to cover; it could be that the concepts seem too difficult; it could be that the whole thing causes anxiety for some completely different reason which is apparently unrelated to the 'academic' side of things.
I help remove anxiety, regardless of what form it might take, in whatever way seems like it will help each individual most. Before long, it becomes possible to see the task in hand with different eyes – indeed, more importantly, at this point most of my students come to see their own abilities entirely differently. They may have come to me with a fixed idea of what they are 'bad' at, but I help them to realise that they have skills they hardly suspected.
GMAT/GRE
I have helped 200+ students with the GMAT and GRE exams over the last ten years. These students have made successful applications to highly competitive schools including HBS, ESADE, LBS, Said, and so on.
I have a track record of helping students achieve scores over 700. I am a quant specialist, and am often brought in to help students at either extreme: I can stretch the high-flyers so they can hit very high scores, and I can also help those for whom maths is more of a struggle to reacquaint themselves with the basics and hit their personal target. I am a graduate of Cambridge University in English literature, and have developed my own system for teaching the verbal also.
SAT/ACT
I have been employed in long-term one-on-one preparation of 300+ students for the SAT-I math and verbal components, ACT, and the SAT-II subject tests.* Of these students, around 40% have ended up making successful applications to Ivy League schools.
Common App
I assist in drafting of Common Application essays and liaising with referees.
GCSE
I have prepared countless students for their GCSEs, in programmes ranging from weekly sessions to month-long one-on-one residential courses. I am comfortable tutoring almost any subject, particularly the following ones: English Literature, maths, sciences, French, German, history, geography, RS, philosophy, statistics and politics/economics.
A-levels
I also tutor A-Levels, especially in English, French and History.
University
Over the past three years I have mentored five BA and MA theses of 10000+ words length. I also teach research skills, building on the training I received as part of my own Master’s degree.
"Ross is an excellent tutor and our sessions made all the difference in bumping up my gmat score from c.700 to 760. Ross helped me craft an effective revision strategy in a short amount of time and we zoned in on points of weakness so I could study as efficiently as possible. Ross was also full of helpful tips which proved crucial during the exam, from time saving techniques for quant problems to pattern recognition for verbal questions. Ross also went further, giving me guidance on questions such as whether to take the GRE vs GMAT, and providing many other resources and test questions I could use for practice. Overall, Ross’s patience and calmness helped to make the revision process much less stressful than it could have been otherwise." Alizeh – GMAT
"Ross helped me prepare for the GRE to apply to PhDs in America. There was a short lead time and a lot to cover, especially on the Math side (I hadn’t done Math since the SAT). Ross was extremely helpful and patient, providing me with helpful materials and going over the concepts I needed to know. His method of explaining things to a more humanities- oriented student was especially appreciated. I felt more confident in my ability to reason mathematically. Ross was friendly, professional, accommodated my schedule, and was generally a joy to work with. I got accepted to three PhD programs with full funding and will be attending Penn in the fall. I definitely recommend him!" Hallie – GRE
"I thoroughly enjoyed working with Ross, he made the GMAT content interesting and enjoyable and provided me with useful, in-depth information about the structure of the exam. He also gave me valuable strategy tips which helped me increase my pace and raise my score by 150 points [out of 800] from my first to second exam. I would highly recommend him to any prospective students." Supriya – GMAT
