About Me

Due to my teaching background, I have up-to date knowledge of the current exam boards, I have a network of resources that most private tutors simply do not have. Since teachers are only allowed to work as examiners, I also bring first-hand experience of what the examiner is looking for, an invaluable insight in my tuition to help build exam technique. These skills I have gained from being accepted as an examiner for the AQA and Edexcel exam boards. I build lots of past exam paper questions into my lessons to ensure students are fully able to apply the content we cover to the exam. This is one way I support students in building confidence and exam technique. I focus on depth of understanding and developing students’ problem-solving skills, this not only makes the maths fun but means students can apply their knowledge to any exam question! This is a new skill being brought into the revised national curriculum. Therefore, will set students up for success in their exams.

To make my lessons engaging, I always show students the real-life applications of the topics being covered and why we are learning about it. No matter how abstract, from simultaneous equations to solving a quadratic equation! I often give students a welcomed surprise, when they realise what our lives would be like without some of these subtly important concepts and discoveries.

Tutor Experience

I have tutored for over 8 years (in mathematics and science) and currently teach maths in a leading independent school where I have my own GCSE classes. I’m also a certified examiner for AQA and Edexcel. Therefore I am fully up to date with all curricular changes and all major exam boards.

I am a fully qualified teacher and a friendly, compassionate tutor with a passion for science and mathematics. I enjoy helping students increase their confidence in the subject, using a variety of teaching strategies.

I have a unique background, having worked in a number of secondary schools around the West Midlands, delivering KS3 lessons up to GCSE in both mathematics and science. I have also worked closely with local primary schools, to deliver booster sessions to years 5 and 6 in mathematics and increase overall engagement in the subject. In addition, I have taught SEN (Special Educational Needs) classes. I am also an examiner for the AQA and Edexcel exam boards.

Currently I teach maths in a leading independent school, with an unusual age range covering year 4 all the way up to GCSE. I have had the opportunity to teach classes of each year, therefore I am multi skilled in both primary and secondary, despite my original specialism being in secondary education. I thoroughly enjoy the variety that this brings and feel it is highly advantageous to my tuition, as I have a very large skill set that I can tailor to any student age range and ability.

Being a teacher, I have proven my capabilities to teach and am subject to continuous assessment via lesson observations, guaranteeing I meet high standards in all my tuition.

Topic Expertise

My main GCSE exam board experience is with Edexcel, AQA and OCR. However, I have access to all previous exam questions from each major UK exam board, together with solutions to help with exam preparation. My teaching style is supportive and methodical, I avoid teaching material that the student already knows and ensure something new is learned or strengthened each lesson. Prior to teaching a new student, I often conduct a baseline test to help me pitch the sessions to the correct level. I can also use recent tests completed at school (for example end of term or end of year tests). This allows me to diagnose any potential misconceptions and identify topics that we can work on together. I am also quite flexible in my lessons, if a student comes to me with a topic or question, they may have struggled with that week, I am happy to adapt my teaching to address this.

I like to obtain the teaching curriculum from the student’s school and use this to ensure our lessons are fully aligned to what is being covered in their school classes. I often cover the topics slightly ahead of their class, to really boost confidence and ensure our tuition fully complements and strengthens their understanding. Using this approach, I have found many parents comment on how their child is suddenly able to put their hand up and answer questions in their classes, which is an amazing transformation and confidence boost for them.

I have a wealth of school experience teaching primary upto and including GCSE. I am equipped with a variety of engaging, teaching strategies, to bring mathematics to real life. I focus on depth of understanding and developing students’ problem-solving skills, this not only makes the maths fun but means students can apply their knowledge to any exam question!
