I have worked as a professional tutor and educational consultant for six years. I have taught dozens of students for thousands of hours in total. I have also worked as a teacher in an independent school in North London.
I have had many successful students; a few examples include:
>Two admitted to study HSPS at Cambridge.
>One admitted to all three of Westminster, Winchester, and St.Paul's for 13+.
>One who gained 84/84 marks in his A-Level Politics Paper 2, which is now being used as an exemplar.
>One who gained an A in A-Level History after being predicted a C.
I believe that the most important virtue in a tutor is the ability to empathise with a student's cognitive position. When teaching I aim to guide a student through the mental steps needed to accomplish the goal of the lesson.
I typically spend much of a lesson in dialogue with the student. I break this up with exercises to embed and reinforce key points, but I always end the lesson with a call to reflection on what the student has learned. I emphasise that knowledge is open-ended and interconnected.

Dr Steve's last completed Global Politics job with Mahrukh: 1-2 hrs/week - I'm struggling in Global Politics at IB Higher Level. I'm fairly certain I want to study PPE at a top university, and go into a politics-related career, but I didn't realize how badly I'm doing in the subject due to not being caught up with current events, and a lot of political history, and I don't know where to start for that. The news covers so much, I don't even know where to begin. I'm in Year 12 got a 4 on my first assignment, and I want to be getting at least a 6 this year, and a definite 7 by the end of my IB programme. I need help catching up with current events, and just generally acing this subject - I didn't particularly find the workload too hard, but my assignment proved me wrong. I'd like help mostly with catching up on political history, current events and assignments to get a 6 or 7 as soon as possible.
I enjoy breaking down complex concepts into digestible bites and communicating it to others. I have practiced this skill throughout my career as a researcher and writer. This, combined with a passion for academic achievement, makes me an ideal tutor. I enjoy working with younger people and students and having had tuition while I was at school, feel eager about helping young people reach their full potential. I have experience teaching primary and secondary school children Maths, Science and English. I have also taught English as a second language. Having gained a BA degree from the University of Cambridge and a MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and being one year through a PhD at the LSE, I feel that I can offer excellent advice regarding university applications, personal statements and interview preparation.
