Verified Research Methods Tutoring Service Reviews From Our Students

Dr Steve - Suzanne- Research Methods - Undergraduate
Monday September 2025
Update on progress my end - now in the "ruthless editing stage", supervisors have the discussion chapter, the reflective piece and the conclusion. Processing the lack (again) of the supervisors holding my work in mind, and how it is spurring me on to just do it all regardless, without their academic support. Discussing the process of the viva, my timeline for submission and the lack of independent reader. Planning for 5 mini vivas with Dr Steve between now and submission. Very good session and very helpful.

Monday August 2025
Update on progress and obstacles encountered (some of which were me getting in my own way and overthinking and/or "holding" too much information. Going throughthe process of the discussion and how I am scaffolding all the elements that need to be included. External examiner - mismatch of who is choosing them- Dr Steve suggested, very wisely, to go back to the handbook for a definitive answer. Revisiting the RQ and aims. Wondering if I could create a table of the gaps to put in the analysis/discussion? Dr Steve showed me some examples from his thesis - and suggested I include some retrospective reflection in my table. Excellent session - very helpful indeed.

Monday July 2025
Checking in with where I am at in the thesis writing. Then, onto the mini viva/viva preparation for the remainder of the session today. Dr Steve posing some poignant questions that caused us to "step out of the min viva" and discuss and clarify. Dr Steve also answering operational questions regarding the process of the viva (for example I had no idea the thesis goes to an independent reader before submission). Very, very helpful session and thought provoking. Learning from this session will clarify my editing.

Thomas is a real-life gem. He helped me understand my literature.

Monday June 2025
Update on progress- now at the editing stage of analysis and conclusion. Going through various problems I have encountered/noticed eg I used the term psychosocial in chapters 1 and 2, and them have not referred to them again. To address. External examiner choice and my supervisors having suggested I contact them informally to make an enquiry. Steve raised a potential difficulty if the examiner responds and asks further questions for example thus compromising neutrality and rigour. Cut or not to cut out context due to word count? Must keep context in but can use tables and bullet points to reduce. Do not use a glossary of terms section. Discussing how to visually delineate themes, sub themes, sub subthemes - an overarching table would be useful. My requesting we have mini mock vivas for the remainder of our monthly sessions leading up to the actual viva to give me some practise.
Liezel - Abdull- Research Methods - Dissertations
Tuesday May 2025
I worked with Liezel during my master’s dissertation, and her support was invaluable. This time, she provided very supportive and constructive comments that helped me improve the clarity and structure of my research methods. Her feedback made a real difference in the quality of my work. Highly recommended!

Update on progress and what is now completed. Discovering reflective supervision in schools as a movement and how this has impacted the literature review - processing this with Dr Steve. Moving onto analysis - first obstacle seems to be the coding that research supervisors feel is "too convenient" . Processing this with Steve to see where I stand on this.

The lessons have been very helpful to me in understanding statistical analysis more, and especially how to analyse data. My tutor has been great in showing me the steps to use statistical software to help me understand what to do and where I may have gone wrong when previously using the software

Monday March 2025
Excellent session. Reporting on progress so far over the past month- chapters 1 and 2 revised, and a reflective piece written. All sent to research supervisors. Completed a sweep of literature review in the meantime and will do another sweep then send to supervisors with the reflective piece yet to be written. Methodology next. Focussing today on chapter 5 - the analysis and delineating what is reporting, what is analysis, what is discussion. Talking this through for the first time so will need to revisit it next time. Dr Steve knows it takes me quite a while for a complex idea to land and we agreed to talk about this again until it lands. In the meantime I will read these sections in multiple papers and report back my progress next time, and then talk through my understanding on these sections. Very helpful explanations.

Monday February 2025
Update on progress and a realisation following a colleague, on the brink of submission, stating: "I hate my thesis". Following reflections on this very powerful statement deciding to add a reflective piece, that verges on the anecdotal, to provide a space for the less scholarly and the more personal/experiential. Going through the content of this piece. Moving on to chapter 2 - the context and working out a structure and a "middle path".
