I recently retired after 40 years teaching chemistry.
I was Head of Chemistry for 35 years and in Charge of Science for 22 years.
I won the 2016 Royal Society of Chemistry Education Award.
I have an extensive website and YouTube Channel to provide post lesson support.
For many years I was a home tutor of GCE Chemistry, using CCEA, AQA, OCR and EDEXCEL
Specifications. Over the last 2 years I have added the WJEC Specification.
Upon retirement I took up a senior position with the CCEA examining team for GCE Chemistry.
As a result I am unable to tutor students for that specification.
Comfortable with teaching online using the Spires platform,
I have an enormous bank of teaching and assessment resources available at the click of a mouse.
Thanks for you interest.
Sorry, but I do not offer trial sessions.

. I need help in achieving top grades as well as predicted grades and referees for my UCAS application
Frank's last review in Chemistry from Sawan: Thermodynamics Excellent!
Since 2015, I have been tutoring both A-Level and (I)GCSE students across multiple boards of examination. I have helped many individuals achieve their academic goals, with students showing improvements by up to 3 symbols. I began this initiative after achieving my Cambridge International Examination (CIE) A-Levels in mathematics, chemistry and physics with an A and 2 A* grades respectively, averaging 90% overall. I aspire, through tutoring, to help all of my students find enjoyment and inspiration within the fields of science and mathematics.
Robin's last completed Chemistry job with peter: Over 2 hrs/week - some really basic chemistry (AQA), need tuition on amount of substance and mass spectrometer , ionisation energy at moment
Robin's last review in Chemistry from Charles: Maths revision brilliant did an edexcel physics specimen paper.
I have been teaching KS3 Science, GCSE Chemistry and A-Level Chemistry to over 150 students since August 2017. I also run an introductory undergraduate chemistry club for those interested in pursuing chemistry to degree level, the aptly named ‘Geek Club’.
I have 200 hours of tutoring experience including over 100 hours tutoring online with Spires.
I graduated with a Masters in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, which included achieving distinction in quantum chemistry and a Masters thesis on chemical education presented at the Variety in Chemistry Education (VICE) conference. Central to my project is understanding how people learn, and identifying common misconceptions that students have prior to encountering a new topic. Developing this foundation in educational theory has undoubtedly improved the way I teach, and I do my best to continue adapting my techniques as I read new literature.
Tom's last completed Chemistry job with Piers: Intensive - Need an A or A*
Tom's last review in Chemistry from Abdal: to be discussed Was really helpful, explained things clearly. Look forward to starting with him.
I have been tutoring and teaching for over 14 years, and over half of that has been spent in the position of Head of Science or assistant principal. I believe that I am easy to be around and students feel comfortable when working with me and are confident that they can ask any question, no matter how silly they may perceive it to be. I always try to think of relevant and engaging ways to tackle a topic to enable all abilities to understand.
Having left teaching in September 2018 to spend more time with my baby daughter, I've set up my own business that designs lesson resources for other teachers. This not only means that I have access to hundreds of resources that I share during lessons to back up the learning but also means that I'm aware of the intricacies and key details of all of the specifications, including the International ones
Gareth's last completed Chemistry job with Caroline: Intensive - Help with final study before exams daughter getting stressed and worried
Gareth's last review in Chemistry from sarah: TBD Gareth went through my topics at both an A level biology and chemistry standard and gave me very useful exams questions at the end.
First up, I enjoy the subjects I tutor immensely and I feel this is one of the most important qualities in a good tutor. In addition, I am friendly and confident and have experience of communicating with others in a teaching environment. Coupled with my enthusiasm for the subjects, this will make for a productive and enjoyable learning environment for students. I have extensive tutoring experience, particularly at GCSE and A-levels and have been working with some students for multiple years. Beyond this, I have been asked by my school to return after my first year of university to regularly help prospective Oxbridge students with their personal statements and applications and was an advisor on interview technique.
William's last completed Chemistry job with Dorota: 1-2 hrs/week - I"m looking for someone who can help my son with AQA A Level Chemistry Year 1.
William's last review in Chemistry from Fleur: Really good lesson.
The subjects that I primarily tutor are Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. My 4 years of tutoring experience has found me tutoring students from year 8 to year 11 and providing valuable SAT preparation lessons.
I am fully aware of the GCSE/pre-GSCE subject matter and requirements. I have tutored numerous international students and their improvements stand testament to my ability to tutor various syllabuses. In addition, the 2 years of calculus, 2 years of chemistry and 1 year of physics that I completed at university, has adequately prepared me for all content appearing in different syllabuses.
Most of my client base is a result of referrals from other students, due to their improvements and belief within my tutoring capabilities. My tutoring ethos is built around a core of patience, passion and pride within my student's success. My experience has taught me valuable techniques for explaining difficult concepts in an easy to understand manner. I always recommend practicing the covered content after the lesson, and provide my own problems/questions if there aren't any available. I also provide lessons for overall test/exam preparation where I provide useful time saving tips among other things.
Grant's last completed Chemistry job with sofia: Occasional - My son is struggling with the basics of chemistry he will be sitting his exams in june/july 2020.
Grant's last review in Chemistry from John: Redox reactions and metal extractions Great, I feel a lot more confident on these topics especially the blast furnace and half equations. Thanks Grant
Amongst other students and balancing degree work, I have recently home-schooled a student through her GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics exams. I taught the courses over 1 year instead of 2, and taking her from a predicted B in double award to A/B/B in separate sciences. Most tutoring was over Skype, so I'm familiar with how to keep attention over video and check students understanding without being in the room. I've been working with Spires for almost a year now and I'm really enjoying the platform.
Florence's last completed
Chemistry job with Kaschta:
1-2 hrs/week - Hi there! I've actually had tutors in the past but they either weren't well organised time - wise or I wasn't getting enough exam technique practise, so anyone who knows the new AQA A level Chemistry syllabus well and has experience teaching it would be much appreciated.
My exams start in June. I'm a private candidate for AQA - Here is a link to my specification: http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/resources/chemistry/specifications/AQA-7404-7405-SP-2015.PDF
I need to cover the following chapters urgently - I've briefly read them but need to understand them better:
3.3.7 Optical isomerism (A-level only) page 54
3.3.8 Aldehydes and ketones (A-level only) page 55
3.3.9 Carboxylic acids and derivatives (A-level only) page 56
3.3.10 Aromatic chemistry (A-level only) page 57
3.3.14 Organic synthesis (A-level only) page 63
3.3.15 Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (A-level only) page 64
3.1.11 Electrode potentials and electrochemical cells (A-level only) page 30
and if possible, also the following as I don't know them very well:
3.1.8 Thermodynamics (A-level only) page 25
3.1.9 Rate equations (A-level only) page 27
3.1.10 Equilibrium constant Kp for homogeneous systems (A-level only) page 29
I haven't covered these at all:
3.3.11 Amines (A-level only) page 58
3.3.12 Polymers (A-level only) page 59
3.3.13 Amino acids, proteins and DNA (A-level only) page 60
Florence's last review in Chemistry from Kaschta: Introduction and a look at carboxylic acid derivatives and their reactions I really enjoyed the trial session. Florence really helped me understand the topic in greater depth and was able to identify and correct my understanding of electrophiles, nucleophiles and the process of nucleophilic addition elimination. Overall - really impressed! :)
