I am a final year Electronic/Electrical engineer currently trying to build a validated and verifiable model of a train in MATLAB/Simulink. Unfortunately, I have missed a lot of the semester due to an ongoing illness and as such I am behind.
The model currently consists of the DC motor, drive shafts and gearbox, wheel model (very basic based on F=Tw*Ro) and vehicle speed (F=MA) in Simulink with some MATLAB code behind.
I’m hoping for some consultancy/tutoring help regarding the modelling of the DC motor, wheel rail interaction and the creep/slip conditions sensibly and accurately. Particularly I’m struggling with resolving the mechanical formulas I’ve discovered. I specifically need help with modelling a sensible wheel rail interaction based on Hertzian contact patch, Kalker Linear Theory, and Polachs paper (chapter 2, included, http://www.sze.hu/~szenasy/VILLVONT/polachslipvizsg.pdf). It needs to show that as adhesion drops, wheel speed will increase whereas vehicle speed will not track exactly as the wheel spins and the DC motors rpm, torque etc need to track similarly with the real-world motors.
I’ve attached a couple of examples of my current approach and layout and some basic calculations as well as some code I was given by my tutor as an indication of what I need to do.
my objectives are:
- to produce a realistic model containing the train (rolling stock) DC motor model, drive shafts and gear ratio model, wheel model, and the contact patch model, resulting in a basic F=MA train model
- Design a controller that could then be used to code (for Arduino) a wheel slip protection system
I should be able to provide graphs to show:
- The step response of the slip dynamic (time vs amplitude of slip) for several adhesion conditions (Mu values of coeff being what changes)
- DC motor outputs current against torque, voltage against torque, motor rpm against wheel rpm (to verify/validate dc model against actual train parameters)

A good tutor needs to have a good ease to read the students' mind. This is important at the time of understand the anxiety that the student is suffering and is preventing him from learning. A good tutor needs to be approachable and quick at creating a comfortable, supportive and motivating rapport between the student and the tutor which provides a fluent channel of communication.
Furthermore, a good tutor needs to be confident at communicating the knowledge. This means, the tutor needs to have a solid background and a thorough understanding of the subject.
