About Me

My education journey started as a mature student back in the old days. It sounds like a cliché, but I am passionate about teaching statistics and research methodology. I find my approach works to enable students to become relaxed about stats. What I like most about teaching is the one-to-one experience, seeing how a student grows in confidence to achieve their potential.
I like to climb (bouldering), grow my own vegetables, work-out and travel.

Tutor Experience

I use a blended approach to teaching which works very well in my current role as statistics tutor on our MSc in Health Psychology, and MSc in Positive Psychology. I consistently receive high satisfaction ratings for this approach and students love the mix of online teaching and in-class bespoke tutoring. This approach translates to my supervision and tutoring of dissertation and MSc projects. I also lecture on eating behaviour, body image, emotion regulation and compassion.

Topic Expertise

University – undergraduate and postgraduate

Academic writing in Psychology (APA style). Research proposal writing. Psychology dissertation projects. Statistics for psychology using SPSS, JASP and EXCEL. My approach to teaching statistics is focused on recognising that students find it difficult. With this in mind, I coach them to understand basic principles of research design, assumption checking, test choice, and how to obtain results for hypothesis testing. I provide templates to support effect write-up of analyses in APA style.

- Psychology

I am thrilled to have found Paul on Spires. Very clear, calming tutor and explained the statistic tests very thoroughly for my final research project. I feel like I now have a much better understanding and the confidence to try the tests on my own and interpret them. I would 100% recommend Paul to any student needing help in this area!

- Statistics

Paul was incredibly helpful, a very calming and reassuring guide on my data/stats.

- SPSS

Paul really is a good tutor, so much so that I want to ask more questions of my data. Paul is also very giving of his time, most times we run over slightly and I am still only billed for the allotted time. You will be remiss not use him for your own studies.

- SPSS

Paul is extremely knowledgeable and offered some great help, providing a follow up of the documents produced in the class.

- SPSS

Paul carried out the coding work that I required prior to the lesson and then sent videos of what he did. Great feedback and instruction and I feel that I am in safe hands to complete the resaerch for my thesis.

- SPSS

I am so pleased that I found Paul to assist me with the statistical component of my thesis. Paul explained things in a way that was easy to understand and I found him to be personable and proficient. I highly recommend him to anyone needing help with statistics.

- Psychology

Paul was very helpful and generous with his time. He made it really easy to understand and I feel a lot more confident finishing my dissertation now. Thank you!
