The History Aptitude Test | HAT FAQs

Why study HAT, the History Aptitude Test?

The colleges of Oxford University use a History Aptitude Test (HAT) in selecting candidates for all degrees that include history. The test aims to assess the skills and potential required for university study and provides an objective basis for comparison between candidates from different backgrounds, including more mature applicants and those from other countries. It is designed to effectively distinguish the most able students from around the world.

The HAT is designed to assess an applicant's critical analytical skills and extensive experience with historical facts. Applicants are expected to learn the fundamental ability to view various scenarios from the objective, unbiased perspective of a historian. Therefore, the test includes questions such as the one in which candidates are asked to interpret an excerpt of text without knowledge of the context.

If you pass the HAT test and study history at Oxford, you will gain a wealth of transferable skills in a number of areas. These include critical thinking, logical reasoning, researching historical sources and writing arguments. These skills are also applicable in many other fields, from law studies to journalism. In conclusion, a history degree not only offers good career prospects, but also promotes academic success.

What university degree is HAT useful for?

Oxford History Department is a leading provider of courses for those who want to learn more about history, up to PhD level. It offers BA (Hons) programmes and MA programmes, primarily designed as preparatory courses for postgraduate research in areas closely related to the study of history or other subjects involving the critical use of historical sources.

Oxford historians have excellent opportunities to improve their language skills. The faculty offers students the opportunity to take courses specifically designed for history students, and if you need independent help with languages outside of class time, there are also excellent materials and resources available at Oxford University Language Centre.

What careers can studying HAT lead to?

Studying history opens a portal for you to take your career in any direction you choose. There is no shortage of opportunities for history majors, since knowing your history is one of the most important asset for many professions!
Here are some future career options for those who undertake the HAT:

How does HAT help with Archaeology?

History is very important in archaeology because without the ability to study past cultures and societies, we would know much less about who humans are as a species. It is also important because without an understanding of history, it becomes more difficult to see connexions between different cultures, peoples, or pieces of evidence created by these groups. The overlap between these two disciplines means that students who major in history can do very well by studying archaeology.

Every day we learn more about the history and put together more pieces of the puzzle that our ancestors left behind. It is important to continue to study history because there are secrets from the past that must be preserved for future generations. History cannot be forgotten or erased with sand or a forgetful act, and it must be passed on so that no one throws away their culture like a dirty rag.

History is nothing without archaeology. Archaeology is a relatively new discipline that has only been around for about 200 years, and it really took off in the last 100 years as people became more interested in our past. The two disciplines are related in that objects provide evidence of things that happened before they were created. But beyond gathering information about the history, archaeology has shown us how ancient people lived and worked, where we came from, and even who we are.

Because tutors set their rates via an auction system, our prices are more competitive than many other companies. Our online classroom is stable and fun to learn through. It has an interactive whiteboard and students can access recordings of classes at any time. They use webcam video chat when being taught.

Spires deals with all of the matching, scheduling, payments, and administration, we take all of the hassles out of organising support and allow students to focus purely on learning.

How does Spires’ online tutoring work?

You can find a professional tutor in four easy steps:

1. Use the Find A Tutor feature to create a post outlining your needs and requirements. You can choose from subject, level, price, and expertise.

2. Find your perfect tutor from our wide variety of skilled professors and educators. After you filter your search results using the Find A Tutor feature you can choose to ‘view profile’ of the best choices for your needs.

You can then see reviews and star rating, including total hours taught for Spires and the price per hr.

3. Have your face-to-face class. This can be done whenever and wherever you are, it’s all online- neither you nor the tutor travels!

4. Replay the classes afterward for any missed information at your own pace and convenience.

Private help is that easy!

Does it matter if the tutor is near me?

No, it doesn’t! It’s all done online whenever and wherever you are. All you have to do is pick your ideal mentor and speak to them to arrange the best time for you to have video lessons. It doesn’t matter at all if they are miles and miles (or kilometre and kilometre) away from you!

Who will my tutor be?

This is all up to you. You have a huge choice. You can look through our member tutor profiles, check student reviews and bids, their qualifications and backgrounds, hourly rates, hours taught, other subject they teach - and even check out if they have many repeat students.

Then, communicate with your favourites to see if they are right for your needs and learning style. You can have a free video call by webcam, usually over zoom. Then you pick the person you’d like to help with your studies and schedule your first webcam lesson!
