What is the UCAS?
UCAS stands for Universities and Colleges Admissions Service and is the main service students use in the United Kingdom to apply to different universities. It serves as a portal to filter through thousands of university courses and find the one that best suits you.
It consists of a system of application forms filled by hopeful students just before admission. It is mandatory for all universities and colleges in the United Kingdom to be registered with UCAS in order to apply. It will also make it easier for universities and higher authorities to keep records and compile statistics.
Applicants applying through UCAS will need to provide various details such as predicted grades and personal statements. With a bit of luck and good grades in your GCSEs and A-levels, there's a good chance you'll get a place at a prestigious university of your choice through UCAS.
There is no particular subject that UCAS specifically helps with, but it offers admissions to almost all universities in the UK. However, universities and colleges set their own admissions requirements, which vary widely. The aim of UCAS is simply to act as an intermediary and match students with their universities of choice.
The requirements set by universities help filter the students based on their qualifications, subjects and exam grades. Most universities will expect you to have pre-16 qualifications such as GCSEs and A-Levels to ensure you meet their standards.
UCAS will also help you find out if your skills meet the requirements of the university you are applying to, so you can save yourself the exorbitant application fees. For example, for each course you can see what skills, interests or experience you need to do well on that course. Also, UCAS informs you about all the compulsory admission tests you need to take before applying. So it's always better to visit UCAS some time before you start your admission to find out if there are any other tests you need to take.
UCAS is the portal to thousands of university courses, and subsequently thousands of career paths. Millions of people apply through UCAS every year and go on in so many different ways.
