Studying Fashion and Textiles is a great option for those who are creative or technically-minded. It provides excellent opportunities for positions in the marketplace, both within the fashion industry itself, as well as supplementary industries that cater to fashion's needs.
Getting a degree in fashion and textiles can open up a wide variety of career paths. There are graduate internships with companies that range from international fashion houses to small nonprofits that work to benefit women around the world. Students can find themselves making a real impact in society by studying sustainable and environmentally friendly materials processing. The world is in dire need of low impact textile design systems in developing countries, to protect the ecosystem from pollutants. You can also make a significant difference in people’s lives by marketing locally produced products internationally, conserving not just the environment, but also waning cultures.
As a textile designer, you may work as a buyer/merchandiser for wholesale firms with manufacturers supplying them with clothes to sell in shops/online. As well as working on exciting new clothing lines for brands or labels. Some examples include Fashion Business Planner, Retail Buyer, Apparel Merchandiser, Textile Products Manufacturing Expert. It’s important to note that most jobs in the fashion and textiles industry require an academic degree. It's no surprise that most top designers have degrees from prestigious art schools.
If learning how to design garments sounds like an exciting prospect to you, then the best degree for you would be a master's in Clothes Manufacturing - Apparel Design and Marketing. This is because it covers both garment production and fashion design. If you are more certain that your career focus will be on design rather than garment production, then you can go for master's in Fashion Development or bachelor in Fashion Design.
The Master's in Creative Knitwear Design aims to train designers and industry professionals with skills both in illustration and technique useful for designing complete collections for models. The experience involves learning new trends, design patterns and creative techniques of the future. As well as learning about industrial processes like material production or craftsmanship methods.
Alternatively, you can also look towards getting a master's in Textile Sustainability and Innovation. With increasing environmental awareness, sustainable fashion is fast becoming extremely important to manufacturers and consumers alike. These businesses are looking to change their age-old practices to ensure their brands play their role in conserving the environment. To do so, they need capable individuals who can meet these requirements whilst bringing profits to the company.
Lastly, you can also get a master's in Fashion, Enterprise and Society and work alongside top business leaders or start your own brand!
This master’s degree equips you with fundamental concepts necessary for running a booming fashion business. You can expect to learn theoretical concepts such as supply chain management, consumer behaviour and marketing. Alongside practical teaching in business and entrepreneurship, to gain broad experience in running a business in a very fast-paced industry.
What careers can studying Fashion and Textiles lead to?
Welcome to the glamorous world of fashion and textile designing. There’s no shortage of opportunities in this career path, and there’s always plenty of room to make a name for yourself among the greats at what you do.
Here are some career options for those who study Fashion and Textiles:
Fashion Management graduates not only understand how money is generated in fashion retailing but also have to be talented designers themselves. It means having experiential knowledge about what products sell year after year and understanding the customer base enough to design clothes that people want. Ultimately, this is the biggest reason why students who study fashion and textile designing in university, are looking to get an MBA in fashion management.
Fashion brands are worth billions of pounds and require able personnel to spearhead their corporate offices. A fashion design degree will increase your chances of getting a competitive edge, but an MBA can give you knowledge in topics like marketing and operations management. Studying business while pursuing fashion education benefits the combination because it gives you expertise that delivers advantages when it comes to retail strategy planning, merchandising and sourcing.
Fashion management professionals are now in need more than ever before. They need to display flexibility and the capacity to adapt to a tougher economic environment, but also to changing consumer trends and shifts in the fashion system. There are tough demands on fashion brands with increasing demand for more sustainable and ethical business practices. This has led companies to look for capable managers that can confidently navigate innovative strategies in an extremely competitive environment.
