Dr Janaby is a Teaching Fellow in International Law at the University of Edinburgh. His research and teaching interests are varied, and he has published and taught in a range of international law areas. He holds a PhD in International Law from the University of Aberdeen (2016) on ‘The Legal Regime Applicable to Private Military/ Security Company Personnel in Armed Conflicts’. He has also gained specialist qualifications in international law, including a Diploma in Rapid Expert Assistance and Co-operation Teams for Conflict Prevention, Crisis Management from International University Centre for Peace Missions- Helsinki Spaña and Escuela de Organización (Spain) 2015, and a Master’s degree in International Law from Iraq (2000). He has previously been a visiting lecturer at the University of Glasgow and the University of Dundee.

Dr Janaby published extensively in his field. His PhD formed the basis of the second monograph, The Legal Regime Applicable to Private Military and Security Company Personnel in Armed Conflicts, published by Springer in 2016. His first monograph, Humanitarian Intervention under International Law, was published in Arabic in 2010. Both books have been well-received. He has a growing list of peer-reviewed journal articles on international and humanitarian law, including publications in leading specialist journals in the US, Netherlands, the UK and Iraq. He is currently working on several writing projects – both individual and collaborative – for submission to peer-reviewed journals as part of my academic development.
