Classical Studies is the study of the ancient cultures from Ancient Greece and Rome. This includes their languages, mythologies, and cultural achievements in science and mathematics fields.
Learning about these cultures can help us better appreciate our modern world, from philosophy to art. The study of classical focuses on four broad subjects: language and literature (natural sciences too), archaeology (archaeological method and theory), philosophy (the mind), and communication arts (artistic production). Classical Studies is rigorous enough to serve as an excellent gateway to other fields such as science, arts, business, or Law. Any area of study can be a focus of classical studies.
Studying Classical Studies is essential because it represents the founding of Western civilization. It establishes the foundation for some of what we consider to be our most valuable institutions, such as democracy and lawmaking from years ago. The buildings that are still standing from Ancient Greece, Rome, and other ancient societies act as a tangible symbol of how much these civilizations have shaped who we are today. As well as studying history through its relics and artefacts, one can create a complete understanding with the use of written documentation of events or literary texts from these same periods, which establish patterns that continue to exist in society today.
