Student’s (and parent’s) most Frequently Asked Questions

Why study Classics?

Studying classics provides a window into our shared cultural heritage and deepens our understanding of society. There’s also the opportunity for making connections between your own life, interests and studies.

Classics is one of the few subjects that can help you understand how modern society is shaped, from technology to politics. Furthermore, it may be studied for personal enrichment and enjoyment or simply as part of an investigation into other societies and cultures.

It is an immersion in ancient culture without which we would not know ourselves today. It exposes students to two thousand years of profound moments in world history, including innovative philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, architectural marvels such as Rome’s Pantheon and Palatine Hill, influential empires including Assyria’s Ninevah with its Ziggurat; crucial discoveries, like paper; world religions such as Mithraism (Zoroastrianism); or periods such as classical antiquity.

Through its connections to almost every point of Western literary and historical study, the ancient world offers an excellent but by no means the only basis upon which to explore all disciplines in humanistic studies.

Useful for a classics degree.

  • Kinesiology, Biology, Chemistry
  • Philosophy
  • English Literature
  • History/Political History

A Bachelor of Arts in Classics forms an excellent foundation for further study in a wide variety of disciplines related to the ancient Mediterranean world; texts and languages from Greece and Rome are found within most departments, including archaeology, art history, classics, English literature, Greek studies, history and philosophy.

Using classics degrees, one can have a career in anything. There is no particular speciality for studying classics – so if you enjoy the subject (and that’s a huge stretch!), then go for it!

What careers can studying Classics lead to?

It is a major branch of the Humanities that comprises the study of classical languages, literature, art, and architecture. Through the study of these subjects, a student acquires broad cultural knowledge such as ancient philosophy. Professionals in Classics range from professors and scholars to writers and politicians.

You can become an archaeologist or anthropologist intent on understanding how human social behaviour has changed over time by studying our ancestors in both written histories as well as artefacts left behind by their cultures, or just gain strong skills in analyzing textual material argumentation and rhetoric.

The study of literature does not hinder one from other professions but strengthens them – a list of careers that Classics can lead to includes all the traditional arts-related jobs such as a musician, an artist, or an actor. Studying it has also opened up more hobbyist-focused positions such as an expert in ancient history, or in ancient civilizations, or a collector of antiques.

How does Classics lessons help with economics?

It helps because Greek and Roman thinkers founded economics on the concept of “the household”.

Furthermore, early economists derived their understanding of consumption patterns from observing the consumption patterns in Ancient Rome.

It is the foundation of much economic theory and analysis and is foundational to understanding money creation. It provides dozens of microeconomic examples which give you a picture of how economic forces work in the real world.

Most importantly, it generates excellent questions that are important for understanding economics – What’s money? What do people do with their time? What’s special about labour markets?

These things were hard to figure out or understand without using classic examples because these features needed time to create before they became standardized parts of human society.

Classics Tutoring can help in Economics because it encompasses a wide range of subjects, including history, literature, art, and languages. Studying these subjects helps with reading comprehension, study skills, and analytical skills, which are crucial for the major.

No, it doesn’t! It’s all done online whenever and wherever you are. All you have to do is pick your ideal mentor and speak to them to arrange the best time for you to have online video lessons. It doesn’t matter at all if they are miles and miles (or kilometres and kilometres) away from you!
