Dr Candace's last completed IB English job with David: Intensive - I am in my final summer before university application and these two months are the only two months I have left to improve my English mark. I am always getting a 60 to 70 percent in my tests, sometimes lower, and I never have time to finish the writing well(I always have to rush a lot in the end.) I need to improve my mark to a seven before next year starts and I am willing to work. Due to my current financial situation, I might not be able to afford too many tutoring sessions. I need a clear quote of how many sessions you estimate I should need to get my grades up. I started IB in grade 10, and my English teacher in grade 10 didn't teach according to the curriculum. I am currently in Canada studying in grade 11. Thank you so much for your help!
I began tutoring students to fund my PhD in English Literature, and I taught a range of syllabuses (OCR, AQA, CCEA, EDEXCEL) and levels (KS2, KS3, GCSE, A-Level and degree). In 2011, I became a Learning Mentor at a top grammar school in Birmingham - King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls - where I helped GCSE students with revision and study techniques, and supported those who had problems revising.
Fuelled by my love of tutoring, I trained to become a teacher, graduating from the King Edwards Consortium (which was rated `Outstanding` by Ofsted) in 2012. I completed my training at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, before taking up a teaching position at Oakham School in 2013. At Oakham, I have taught A-Level English Literature, IB, GCSE and KS3 classes.
I am passionate about all aspects of teaching English, but particularly enjoy helping students to develop the craft of writing in order to express their ideas and views more carefully and clearly. As an experienced GCSE examiner, I also know how to help students express their ideas in a way which will gain them valuable marks. Furthermore, I am fully trained to teach the IB, having attended numerous certified workshops.
Overall, I am an enthusiastic, caring, and motivational teacher: I inspire my students to achieve their potential, and I work hard to develop their self-confidence, which is key to success.
Alice's last completed IB English job with Lewis: Occasional - I am an IB student studying English Literature at SL. I am adept at English and do not require intensive support. I would like help with marking and improving English essays. The one I am working one currently is a script for my English Oral, for help with this I will need someone with an understanding of the mark-scheme.
Alice's last review in IB English from Lewis: 1/2 hour feedback on written work (will be completed beforehand) and 1/2 hour live session Brilliant, I received lots of help and guidance. The tutor is clearly very knowledgable and has a great approach to teaching.
Worked regularly as a tutor alongside my work as an outstanding English teacher, particularly experienced in helping students achieve high grades in IAs and Extended Essays.
Callum's last completed IB English job with Tyra-Ashley: 1-2 hrs/week - I am an IB DP Year 2 student, based in Germany, sitting the May 2020 exams. Higher Level English Literature is one of the six subjects I have chosen as a component of my course selection. I am a medical applicant with specific IB point requirements and I am looking to improve my forecasted English Literature performance. I would like to raise my current performance to a level 7 standard and would require guidance particularly in approaches to Paper 2.
Professional teaching experience
I am a professional teacher of English, with 4 years of experience in both state and independent sectors. In my teacher training (through the prestigious Teach First Leadership Development Programme), I gained a distinction, and have been promoted every year of my teaching career. In my previous school, I ran staff training sessions to improve teaching practice for high ability students, and worked as a coach for fellow teachers. I have taught GCSE, IGCSE, A Level and IB qualifications, as well as coaching and mentoring students through UCAS and Oxbridge Entrance. In my teaching role until now I have had little time for paid tuition, but working on-on-one with students outside of class time is part of my daily practice as a teacher, especially when students are struggling or need extra challenge. I have worked extensively with a wide range of ages (11-18) and abilities, as well as with SEN and EAL students.
Paid tuition work outside of teaching
Currently, I tutor one student outside of school as she has needed extra support due to English being her second language. Previously, I tutored a student on creative writing techniques - this is a particular interest of mine.
Edith's last completed IB English job with Piotr: 1-2 hrs/week - I am looking for IB English B HL Tutor to help me prepare for November retake session.
I pride myself in the quality of working relationship quickly developed with students of all ages. Whether reaching for examination confidence, mastery of subject content or skills, or progress with emotional, behavioural or cognitive needs, all tutees should expect teaching that is entirely personalised and constantly adaptive to their evolving learning, including:
- guidance for pupils toward understanding and pride in all supported subject disciplines, while troubleshooting all associated challenges, from frustrations with phonics to maths anxiety, from the art of the essay to that of examination-timing and from Alternative Vote in politics to ‘alternative conceptualisations’ in chemistry;
- mentoring or life-skill teaching: identifying and fostering scholastic and general skills beyond those specific to particular academic subjects yet required for flourishing within educationally related outcomes generally;
- support for atypical educational needs. Teaching in this area is important to me, and I am currently extending my training with additional part-time postgraduate studies. Inwardly, special-needs are never what I see; what I see are special opportunities: exciting opportunities. My teaching teaches for exciting futures, not needful ones.
My aim is for each of my students to discover the tools, skills and conviction to achieve all the outcomes of their and of their parents’ hopes. I want my students to discover what they can do and to inspire themselves by what they find.
My earliest stint with teaching dates back more than a decade when I helped my mother take private tuition at home. Fast forward to 2017 when I was conducting workshops in my MBA school to help students prepare for their semester exams (in subjects such as Financial Markets, Corporate Finance, etc.). In order for me to be able to explain the subject matter, I need not just be well read. I need to be well spoken as well. I am a voracious reader and a passionate public speaker and have represented my school and college at the national level in different competitions. Brewing my interest in the incessant world of finance, I cleared my CFA Level 1 and 2 and FRM Level 1 exams in the very first attempt and am currently awaiting my FRM charter and preparing for my CFA Level 3 exams simultaneously. I have been a subject matter expert reviewer (Finance) for Study.com wherein I reviewed 2500 questions in a span of 6 months (of which 2499 reviews were correct). Of late, I have been a finance tutor on Chegg USA and have completed 200 odd lessons with a 100% success rate.
